One question really bothers me is what Ann,s husband says abt elizabeth , that he was sleeping wid him etc. ? was that true or he was just making it up to square with james and to break him? and if yes it was true how come he was so stupid as to never really understand her and her lies? in a way that liberated James , if she was sleeping with guys , revelevation of breake free james!!

The film is not about sex at all but about emotion. Because of what happens Ann is on the way to being set free as is Graham and, curiously, as is Ann's sister Cynthia, who at the end of the day is obviously far happier having a good relationship with her sister than being John's whore. What I particularly like, and what I thought was quite subtle, was that there is no suggestion whatsoever of a 'happy ending'. It is more that because of what happens and they way it happens at least three characters can see a way out of the dead-end street they have somehow ended up in.
In answer to your question, no, I don't think the absent Elizabeth was a slut. It was just that Graham was far to immature to take it when she broke up with him. Many women have many partners and see sleep with other men on the side. The major difference between them and men is that they don't feel the need to go bragging about it and have long realised the beauty of discretion.
John was the sort of guy who needed to prove to himself that he could bag any girl he wanted even if he knew it would cause trouble in her more important relationships.
In his twisted mind he probably saw it as a badge of honor that she had slept with him even though she was involved with Graham. It didn't show that she was a slut any more than it made him a jerk. He was a jerk already.
