I disagree with him, though. For a late eighties feature length family nintendo commercial, it's pretty well made, scripted and acted.
Shallow? It had a deep story for a family flick. The key to interpreting it is to see the adults as idiots and villains keeping the hero from finding his "California" and making peace with the death of his sister.
The ending actually touched me more emotionally than Rain Man's did.
