K-9

Can somebody tell me why the film K-9 and Turner & Hooch, which where both shown in 1989, are almost identical? Lazy storywriters?

reply

Almost identical, yet both great! By the way, does anybody knows what kind of dog is Hooch?

Hooch is a Dogue de Bordeaux, (French Mastiff) I'd never heard of these dogs until I saw the film, although in recent years I've seen quite a few in the UK.

According to the September 1992 issue of DOGworld magazine (classified section p.142), there were three Dogue De Bordeaux in this movie [its unclear if all three dogs played hooch in different scenes]. Their names are Beasly, Barry, and Vigor. It's really a shame that the dog wasn't listed in the movie credits. Their lineage, I believe, is from Ch. TNT's Sphinky De Merrimac (later became 1991 world champion). The breeder was Peter Curley from Merrimac, WI. The Dogue de Bordeaux is a considered a rare breed, so you won't find him on the american kennel club website; they are expensive, usually about $1,500 for a puppy. There are a number of good Bordeaux breeders, as well as a few not-so-reputable breeders (these dogs have also been bred/used ala pit bull for fighting). There is an outstanding breeder in Michigan, Red Dog Ridge, whose dogs are considered to have fabulous blend of personality and looks. Tell him I sent you. :)

you do remembeer there was a Dogue De Bordeaux puppie at the end

and there was bound to be a second trained hooch to fill some scenes (common practice)

Beasley is listed in the credits. No mention of "barry" and "vigor" though.

umm.. why did Deep Impact and Armageddon come out in the same year?

There are actually quite a few FAMOUS examples of films coming out in the SAME year that tackle alot of the same territory.. although off hand.. I can't think of anymore.. but

well for example at ONE point just recently there were TWO films that were to cover Che Guevera (two SEPERATE PROJECTS) as well as there were 2 set up as stories about drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

At one point there were 2 competing Janice Joplin bio pics ... that's just off hand.. I know there are a whole lot more and my memory is fuzzy at best although I am sure there are plenty of people who can remember alot more.

although.. was it COINCIDENCE that Rush Hour and Lethal Weapon 4 came out within MONTHS of each other?

You got it! And how about those two Prefontaine films that came out at about the same time, then then the two Capote films? How about the two Lambada films?

I'll watch two similar dog movies any day, as long as they're good (which is to say: as long as the dogs are cute).

Then you have Dante's Peak and Volcano.

Also, recently, two mall-cop films: "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "Observe and Report."

Films take a while to get made away.
It's not as if both films were in pre-production, cast, filmed, edited, post-production and released all in 1989.

Films get moved around Hollywood for years before they are made.
Sometimes an idea is pitched, not picked up and moved to another company but then the first company will make the film using a similar concept but change it just enough from the original idea...which is why you get films with a similar idea released at the same time.
