I know that some have criticized the cemetery scene where Ms. Field talks about that she was supposed to be the one to go first,etc but I felt she deserved at least an Oscar nomination. Thousands of us can empathize with the pain of a parent losing a beloved child. Why she got no nod from the Academy baffles me while so many poor performances (Paltrow in "Shakespeare in Love" and many more, received Oscars.

shareI always thought the same thing. Sally Fields' cemetery scene was one of only a handful of movie scenes that made me cry. She deserved an Oscar for this. I can't figure why Paltrow won an Oscar for such a forgettable role. I think the Academy is not on the up and up very often; bribery, I heard is still rampant. Norma Rae never moved me like this film!

I think her cemetary scene (I WANNA KNOW WHHHHHHHHHHHHY!!!!!!!!) is one of the most mesmerizing I have ever seen. I saw it in the theater, it got me then and it still gets me now whenever it's on TV. There's only one Sally Field! As to why she was not nominated, I don't know. She had already won the Oscar twice...and maybe the Academy just isn't as nice to everyone as they are to La Streep.

people actually have a problem with that scene? I was only half way paying attention the entire movie UNTIL that scene! It was amazing, and i usually hate crying scenes.

I've seen this movie countless times, a lot of them when I was still kid but now as an adult, I see how amazing her performance was. She really deserved an Oscar nomination for this. The cemetery scene is so hard to watch as I imagine that is probably how a lot of mothers feel when they lose their children early in life.
