1.Better driving sequences and more of them. Most of the driving scenes in CR were establishing shots setting up some conversation or comical moment. SZ's driving scenes mostly led to some pretty tricky driving.
2.A villain who's actually a threat. Let's face it. Mr. Foyt was basically subject to a humiliation conga that lasted the entire film. Edsel, on the other hand, actually managed to score a major victory against the Cannonballers. Thus, his eventual defeat seems all the more satisfying.
3.Wish fulfillment. Of the six main featured cars, only two (the Bentley and the van) were in the hands of teams that could realistically afford them. The BMW, Jaguar, Ferrari, and Lamborghini were respectively driven by a parking attendant, a down on his luck gambler, an undiscovered computer scientist, and a cop. All of them ended up driving cars they couldn't acquire normally and we went along for the ride.
4.The best finish of any Cannonball film. For some reason, watching the victorious car get trashed was strangely amusing.
5.We actually get to see the racers and how the race affected them when all is said and done. One driver learns to stand up to his brother. One learns to relax. Another learns to live a little. Another convinces his teammate to find a new job. One develops the backbone to stand up to a so-called "friend". And the last two ski into the ocean.
i agree...I love this movie...definitely my favourite of the cannonball run films. I would like to add one more for you lol
6. Having a bad ass movie poster with the lambo jumping over the cop car. Will always remember that poster as a kid at my local video store. Great memories
Nice list, with debatable points (1 and 2), and some irrelevant or invalid points (the rest). I think it's more fun to see the Cannonballers outwit the nerd (and sometimes each other) in various ways in the Cannonball Run.
However, let's consider the opposite argument, why Cannonball Run is better:
- The early eighties atmosphere (instant WIN!) - Better comedy - Better as a 'movie' (more solid 'storyline', such as it is) - Better structure (has to do with the previous point) - More goofy, relaxed 'fun' - Jackie Chan (instant WIN number 2!) - Roger Moore - A super hero - Fantasy quality (what's more wish fulfillment - a computerized rocket supercar with infrared or a poor man driving a Bentley?) - Brighter, more uplifting atmosphere - No useless John Candy-crap (he can be fun in some movies, but here.. no) - Better musics (the intros are pretty great in both, though the stupid Lee Van scene is just really irritating) - Surreal meta (Roger Moore playing Seymour that thinks he is Roger Moore!) - More interesting (or should I say ACTUAL) chracters - More comedy - More energy - More charismatic people and stars (the Lamborghini driver is a total no-charisma, whoever he is) - It's actually summer in Cannonball Run (as far as I can remember), and we see lots of beautiful nature. But here it looks like autumn or something. Depressing. - Actually fun
By the way, it's interesting to see that some of the cast has also been seen in Seinfeld, Fletch, Vacation, etc. I think I even saw Julia Louis-Dreyfus, but not sure (the women that arrive in the women's toilet near the beginning, when the two women are spewing misandry, while at least admitting that women have sexual power that men don't).
This movie just .. doesn't work. Cannonball Run was EXPLOSIVE, ENERGETIC fun with exciting and inspiring early eighties energy field. This is almost nineties already, and doesn't have the same 'drive' (no pun intended).
It's like a lazily made, calculated, soulless cashcow by comparison.
Where's the _FUN_? You may like this movie or even prefer it - but surely you must concede that the original (like almost always) is clearly the best (and thus better) movie as an experience, movie, and as a whole.
By the way, I find this movie quite boring. The whole John Candy crap could have been cut without losing anything. then the movie halts almost completely with the militaristic police-crap. Yawn. Does it try to emulate Police Academy?
- Fantasy quality (what's more wish fulfillment - a computerized rocket supercar with infrared or a poor man driving a Bentley?)
That comment alone tells me the mentality of the person who posted it. The poor man driving an expensive car would be more wish fulfillment since the majority of the audience can identify with him.
Also, the comedy in CR hasn't aged well at all. There's a lot of ethnic/racial humor which seems cringeworthy by today's standards.
- Better as a 'movie' (more solid 'storyline', such as it is) - Better structure (has to do with the previous point)
Please elaborate on these points because SZ seems to be better in both regards to me.
- It's actually summer in Cannonball Run (as far as I can remember), and we see lots of beautiful nature. But here it looks like autumn or something. Depressing.
The actual Cannonballs took place in November of the years they were run. So, you just said that CR is less realistic than SZ.
Everything else you listed is purely subjective.
