He was able to do it the same way they were. They were able to shapeshift to the point of almost being amorphous so all it took was a little effort. Also, when Ferguson was inside-out, he was basically empty.

Exactly! And there was no explanation. How can anyone think this was truly a good movie without explaining something so basic as just WHAT the bad people are and how the hero was able to win at the end;
He didn’t “shunt” him. He just took advantage of Ferguson’s morphing state and reached up into him and pulled him inside out.

One of the most underrated movies in history IMO. I thought that what they really were must stay in the spectator imagination. There are clues that they were closer to demons, i mean, they were different of human beings. They feed from people, and they were cultists. In fact i always thought that they were satanists. Here in Brazil the name of the movie is "The Society of the friends of the devil".
