Amazing, and a recommendation...

This was my sixth Heneke film, and as always, I wasn’t disappointed. I have literally only just finished watching it, so my mind is racing. After a quick scan of the message boards (always best to do this after watching a Heneke film rather than before) I seem to agree with the general interpretations.

The main reason for posting though, is a recommendation by a director with a similar vision – Gasper Noe. The film being “I Stand Alone” (Seul contre tous) which I implore any lover of Der Siebente Kontinent to seek out immediately. As with the Seventh Continent, the film oozes nihilism and hopelessness, and will leave even the more hardened viewer gasping for breath.

I rate the Seventh Continent at 9/10. I would have preferred a little more in terms of character motivation (on screen), but then I look around, and I see so clearly, their motivation.

I watched this movie about 13 hours ago and since none of my friends are into Haneke, I have also spent some time reading the message boards. Not necessarily looking for answers (I have seen Haneke's interview on the DVD extra's and am aware of how and why he wrote the story and directed in the manner he did), but always good to read other people's POV and insights. It was my 5th Haneke. Started with The Piano teacher, Hidden, Benny's Video and recently the original Funny games. The rest of his titles are in my DVD rental service list, ready arrive over the next few weeks.
My expectations were mixed. Either this movie would be a great piece of work, since a directors (previously unreleased)creativity can burst forth during their first opportunity to do so.... or it may have been a good/fair effort, but perhaps not on par with his recent films.
Well, I wasn't dissapointed and found this film could have placed comfortably any where in the collection, obviously the 80's styling dates it, but you know what I'm saying. Skill-wise he had it from the get-go.
Does anyone know any of Michaels other influences (other than the newspaper stories), books, other films, favourite authors and directors ? I wonder what he likes and what he IS like.
I find his work so unnerving, potent, it creeps up on you and I like the fact as a viewer you work harder during and after the film to interpret it, break it down. Much more impact compared with other films which I have finished watching and barely ever give them another thought.

I couldn't agree more about your recommendation. Seul Contre Tous is spectacular, and certainly has a similar theme to this film. I'd venture to say Gaspar Noe is one of the most exciting and interesting filmmakers around today.

His films are kind of an assault to the senses though, you know? Haneke likes to wear you down to a nub, slowly and subtly. Noe comes right out and decapitates you (comparitively, I mean).

Agreed! Noe's latest film (currently in post production) looks atounding. He is tackling the ultimate subject.
I think it will be his best.
