Haneke is not very "politically correct" in this way. In "Hidden" a rooster has it's head chopped off and in "Benny's Video" a hog is killed on screen. Doesn't diminish the artistry of his films, but if you are sensitive, beware.

reply

in the interview on the DVD Haneke says it's interesting people have more of a problem with the aquarium scene than the idea of parents killing their own child. which can be seen as a good point, however, the animals in his films are actually killed, and the killings of people are, of course, staged.
Haneke's idea of reality vs. media is pretty interesting and keeps you thinking.

reply

Yeah, it is true in Benny's Video as well. The killing of the pig, which is real and visceral, is more disturbing than the killing of the girl, which we know is staged, and which is mediated through the video, and takes place off to the side, outside of view.

He referred to both as more upsetting to the Cannes audience than the daughter's death.

Of course people have more problem with the fish (and/or the money). The fish played their parts so well they died.

Like someone has already written; we know people only staged their deaths. Besides, the whole film is about the dullness of their lives, so how could we possibly care? Hell, if this was interactive I wouldn't be surprised if some viewer killed them first and saved us all from the misery; them from living, us from watching. *joke, of course*

I think killing of animals for such purpose should be made illegal. Haneke could at least return them to water before they died, we'd still get the point.

reply

Its okay to kill fish. As Kurt Cobain said they don't have any feelings.
