Why did they take the time to destroy their entire house? It's not worth the effort if you're killing yourself afterwards!

I would assume it was to drive home the fact the couple was trying to shed all the materialism cluttering up their life. Hence the money flushing, as well. Plus it obviously makes it a little more interesting- the rest of the film is pretty bland, but I still enjoyed it. I found that last half-hour was pretty interesting once they started destroying the house.
