More proof Netflix edits their films

Just watched this on Netflix and again noticed a big edit. The scene of Joan Severance getting out of the shower and dropping her towel is cropped to not show her breasts. As an adolescent boy seeing this for the first time, I remember that scene very well. Either that or Netflix cheaped out and licensed the UK cut, as the trivia section says that version contains this edit. Reminds me of when Blockbuster used to edit the movies on their shelves.

It has NOTHING to do with netflix. If you looked around, there are multiple posts on here about this scene being cut from all versions but the VHS ones. It was edited well before netflix came around.

Thanks for the reply, but why is it unedited on the UK Netflix like the above poster said? So you're saying the scene was cut from all but the VHS versions...so it came out for home video on VHS uncut and they re-edited it when they put it on DVD the first time? That makes no sense, especially for an aging comedy like this. And there are plenty of screenshots of the scene online. I doubt they came from a VHS.

No clue. What I can tell you is the dvd copy I just pulled off my shelf and scanned is edited.

My reply from before was based off of the multiple posts on this board about this very scene. Take some time to look through them. You might just find your answer.

BTW according to those that saw the movie in the theaters, there was no frontal nudity shot in this scene, just the side boob from her reaching out of the shower for the bag. It was only on the VHS version because of the way it is cut for VHS screen sizing. DVD went to widescreen and it cut the bottom off again just like it did in the theater.

So YES, the frontal nudity was just on the VHS version. Perhaps the UK netflix one is an old ported VHS version, or the previous comment is full of BS. Couldn't tell you.

Either way, based off it not being in the original theatrical release, this was well before Netflix got a hold of their copy for streaming obviously.

I just watched the scene back to back on US and UK Netflix to compare them and the scene plays exactly the same on both versions.

At 1hr 09mins 24secs on both versions there's plenty of side boob visible when Joan leans out of the shower to pick up her bag.

At 1hr 11mins 15secs precisely on both versions she is out of shower and drops her towel as ordered to, there is no full frontal breast visible. Never having watched this on VHS when it was released I can't say whether the scene has been cropped or not from the original but the towel dropping scene, the scene the OP is talking about, does not show any breast on either version.

The scenes play exactly the same on US and UK Netflix, neither has more editing than the other.
And may I just say what a pleasurable piece of research this was to do.

What you were watching was likely an open matte version of the movie. Basically, with open matte, a movie is filmed in 4:3 and for theaters the top/bottoms are cropped for a widescreen appearance. The widescreen version is universally considered the definitive version of the movie, so it's the version that's naturally the one released on DVD/Blu-Ray (Titanic is another movie filmed in open-matte - I think even the Blu-Ray includes that version as an option to watch, where you can, uh, see more of Kate Winslet in the drawing scene). There are some open matte films (usually only available to watch on VHS, naturally) where you can spot some of the film equipment being used at the top or bottom of the screen, another good reason why some films are cropped to a widescreen appearance.
