Actor G.W. Bailey plays Lt. Thaddeus Harris in Police Academy 1, 4, 5, 6 & 7. However, in parts 2 & 3 he is replaced by Art Metrano who plays Lt. Mauser, a similar character to that of Lt. Harris. Does anyone know reason for G.W. Bailey´s absence in the 2nd and 3rd parts?
Probably because Lt. Harris was stationed at the Police Academy in part 2 which we don't get to see. Maybe G:W. Bailey's character wasn't written into the script for this reason. It's the same for Callahan who is also not in the movie. In part 4 he is the captain of his own police station which might explain his absence in part 3. Don't know for sure though, just a guess. My personal favourite of the two is Harris. He and Proctor work better as a team IMO.
in police academy 2 they are at the police station of pete lassard (eric's brother) harris doesn't work there, mauser does at police academy 3 harris must be got out of the eric's academy and gets back in the 4th movie with a promotion
I don't know exactly why Mauser is in 2 & 3 instead of Harris, but I can say that Harris is definitely my favorite (especially with Proctor!). I do like the Mauser gags, especially when they glue his hands to his head while shampooing! Still, Harris & Proctor many times steal the show, especially in PA#6: City under siege.

"harris must be got out of the eric's academy and gets back in the 4th movie with a promotion"
This is most likely the case and was probably done because the producers felt that there was only room for one 'baddie' per film (complete with one clumsy sidekick, who just happens to be Proctor). However, it still seems strange to me that Mauser had somehow managed to 'gain himself', not only a 'promotion', but his very own Police Academy !!!
How the hell did this happen ???
In Police Academy 2, he holds the rank of Lieutenant, trying ever so hard to reach Captain status (which he does for a short while). Yet, in Police Academy 3, he is Commandant of his very own Police Academy (complete with different uniforms).
Another thing that mystifies me is Proctor, who, together with Mauser, switches completely from one academy to another (yet, in Proctor's case, he switches right back again to align himself with Harris, who is a Captain himself at this point, in Police Academy 4).
A similar sort of thing happens with Nick Lassard and Thomas 'House' Conklin.
In Police Academy 5, Sergeant Lassard is working as a policeman in Miami Beach. Yet in PA 6, he is working for the Metropolitan Police Department.
In Police Academy 4, Tommy Conklin - also known as 'House' - is just a normal citizen, who joins up with the new C.O.P. (Citizens On Patrol) program. Yet in PA 5, he is a full-fledged Police Officer.
Many things in PA are unexplained, but we have to "assume" police officers can switch between Academies. In Nick's case, he wouldn't have much of a problem leaving the Miami Beach Police to join Lassard's group, since he is the nephew of Eric. We could also assume that Mauser was offered the job as Commandant since he never got to finish being Captain... just a thought. But you are right with House. He was a COP, not a police officer. Ah well, maybe you are just being picky! :P

I don't want to be discouraging, but I don't think Police Academy is supposed to make realistic sense. I actually never tried to apply reality to these movies. Can't wait for that 7 DVD box set in April!

You're right, they are not supposed to make realistic sense. We could analyze these films to death and we still wouldn't find an answer. But we can still speculate :)

"I don't think Police Academy is supposed to make realistic sense"
True. But generally, I've always found the Police Academy films to be very good when it comes to continuity, etc.
For example, in Police Academy 4, the producers seem to 'go out of their way' so-to-speak, in order to bring back the original actors to use for the Kirkland family (first seen 2 years earlier in Police Academy 2). For the amount of time their scene lasted, the producers could have so easily casted a different actress to play, let's say, the mother of the family (and generally, the public wouldn't have been any wiser; unless you're a PA fan, of course). In addition, in this particular scene, you can clearly see that Kathleen Kirkland-Tackleberry is wearing her blue 'sergeant stripes', while Bud Kirkland still holds the 'basic' rank of Police Officer (which is quite right, as Kathleen had been in the force for much longer than Bud, who had only just graduated from Cadet a year earler).
The same can also be said for Police Academy 6, when the producers once again bring back Arthur Batanides to play the *very* small role (at least where this film is concerned) of Mr. Kirkland. Furthermore, in this particular movie, Tackleberry says to either Jones or Hightower (can't remember which) that he took a 'big-wheeler' on his honeymoon. Indeed he did - at the end of Police Academy 2.
Nick lassard was not a police academy cadet in the 5th one. He was a cop. He transferred to the Police Academy because he was probably offered a job by his uncle. At the beginning of the fifth one, you see House graduating from the actual police academy. He must of liked being part of the C.O.P. and decided he wanted to become an actual cop.
As mentioned on the board for 2, he was doing other films at the time. He actually wouldn't have fit into the first sequel because I figure he was back at the academy training the next group of dirtbags. He did appear as an extra at Tackleberry's weddding, though, because he had visited the set that day.
