CARLOTTA:
I need more space to put the roses and the fans´ notes.

POLIGNY:
More... space???

CARLOTTA:
Perhaps, another dressing room.

POLIGNY:
But... um...

CARLOTTA:
(Angry)
Right now!!!

POLIGNY:
Very well. (To BUQUET). Could you arrange that, Buquet? (To CAST) Opera will star in 15 minutes (To SORELIE) Sorelie, you come first.

Enters MADAME GIRY - the ballet mistress (MEG GIRY'S mother)

POLIGNY:
Your ballet girls will enter on 18 minutes!

MADAME GIRY:
All right, monsieur.

Enters RÉMY, the conductor.

POLIGNY:
Ah, Remy. How is your orchestra doing.

REMY:
(Worried)
Monsieur Poligny, someone stolen the score for the third act!

POLIGNY:
What???

SORELIE:
(To POLIGNY)
This is the work of the Phantom! The Phantom of the Opera!

BALLERINAS scream.

POLIGNY:
Stop girls, now! There isn´t a ghost, there wasn´t a ghost and will never have a ghost!

Carlotta exits in right

The head-chef CLAUDE enters on left.

CLAUDE:
Monsieur Poligny! The turkey for the gala party despaired from the storage!

POLIGNY:
It can't be! Everything must be just perfect for the reception of the new managers tonight at the lobby!

CLAUDE:
Well... We don't know what to do!

POLIGNY:
Ask someone to buy a new turkey!

CLAUDE:
But they don't sell turkeys late at night.

POLIGNY gets angry.

POLIGNY:
(Angry)
Improvise!!! Do something, man! You're a famous chef!

CLAUDE exits.

POLIGNY:
I don't know how could this get worse!

CARLOTTA enters carrying a bag and her face is covered by a black veil.

POLIGNY:
Ah, Carlotta... You're singing next and... Where are you going? Why you're not in your costume for Marguerite!

CARLOTTA:
La Carlotta follows no one and sing to no one. Goodbye!

POLIGNY:
But... YOU'RE LEAVING US NOW?!

CARLOTTA:
Well, I told you Poligny if one more of this "strange" things continue to happen I would live the theater. And just when I got back to my room, someone stolen my costume and leave this.

CARLOTTA hands him a note.

POLIGNY:
(Reading)
If you sing tonight you'll die! Signed the O.G.

POLIGNY turns to left, CARLOTTA has gon away.

POLIGNY:
No, this can't be! Our diva left us... Just like the turkey.

SORELIE comes to POLIGNY.

SORELIE:
Well, you may try Christine. The young soprano who's playing Siebel.

POLIGNY:
Daaé? Christine Daaé?

SORELIE:
She's very talent Monsieur.

Ballerina MEG GIRY enters

MEG:
Christine Daae sings like a ant.

SORELIE:
She sings better then you do, Meg.

(To POLIGNY) Excuse-me, dear Poligny.

CHRISTINE DAAÉ, 20 year old, brunette and young enters from left.

CHRISTINE:
Monsieur Poligny?

POLIGNY:
Oh, thank god! Do you know Carlotta´s lines don´t you?

CHRISTINE:
Of course, I rehearsed with her everyday.

POLIGNY:
Good. (To COMPANY) Opera will start in five minutes. (TO CHRISTINE) Please, do your best! You will follow after Sorelie´s solo.

COMPANY leaves on left and right. CHRISTINE is alone at the stage;

CHRISTINE:
Angel? Angel? Can you hear me? Come to me my Angel of Music.

SONG: ANGEL OF MUSIC

CHRISTINE:
Once I am onstage I hear him calling my name
When I´m my dressing room his voice harms my soul...
Angel of Music
Sing Again
I´ll be waiting for you
Angel of Music
Don´t leave my alone!

The image of ERIK, THE PHANTOM, in black with a red cape, a mask and a hat appears on the mirror behind her.

ERIK:
I´ll be there with you
Don´t you fear
The Angel of Music
Has Come to You...

BOTH:
Angel of Music
Don´t leave me alone
In this very night
I´ll be onstage
And when the light shines on my face...

ERIK:
I´ll be there!

ERIK´S image despair from the mirror. Music ends.

She turns around, the curtain opens and we see the huge crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the conductor in front of her and there are two boxes, one on left and one on right. We hear a tunderous applause.

CHARLES, the young, mid-20´s new manager of the opera appears on the left box.

CHARLES:

Scene 2 - A Party

Backstage of the Paris opera house, hours after the performance, almost midnight.

It's dark, we only see the two new managers, mid 50's - RICHARD and GABRIEL.

RICHARD:
Gabriel?

GABRIEL:
Yes?

RICHARD:
Why did Monsieur Poligny called us to be here at this precise moment???

GABRIEL:
Don't ask me.

RICHARD:
Maybe it's somekind of a joke!

GABRIEL:
This is so awful! I'm leaving.

GABRIEL turns around.

ALL:
Surprise!

Suddenly, stagelights are on. We see all the members of cast and staff entering from left and right.

SONG: WELCOME, NEW MANAGERS

MEG/SORELIE:

Music ends.

RICHARD:
W-what?! A party?

POLIGNY:
Welcome, Monsieur Richard. Welcome, Monsieur Gabriel. Welcome to the Paris Opera House. Our temple of art! Allow me to present you to my crew.

GABRIEL:
I really thank you for the party, but...

POLIGNY points to BUQUET

POLIGNY:
This is the head stagehands - Alphonse Buquet.

POLIGNY points to MADAME GIRY and MEG

POLIGNY:
The ballet mistress - Madame Josephine Giry and her daughter Marguerite.

All clap hands. Poligny points to the orchestra made onstage.

POLIGNY:
Our conductor - Monsieur Rémy.

All clap hands.

POLIGNY:
Now, the orchestra will play a few compositions. Maestro?

Orchestra start playing Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

POLIGNY goes in direction of the managers.

POLIGNY:
Oh, welcome.

RICHARD:
You already said this.

POLIGNY:
Ah, I see. It's so exciting for us. You see, no managers have agree to take care of the opera house for 10 YEARS! Many managers left quickly after they get here.

RICHARD:
Why?

FIRMIN:
Poor Carlotta. She sang so well and yet fainted onstage.

POLIGNY:
Carlotta? That wasn't Carlotta, my dear Monsieur. Her name is Christine Daaé, a new singer at the company. She was singing the part of Siebel and Carlotta left just before the performance so she got the place.

FIRMIN:
Why did she left?

POLIGNY:
Family troubles.

MADAME GIRY appears.

MADAME GIRY:
No family troubles, monsieur.

FIRMIN:
What?

MADAME GIRY:
I don't presume that Monsieur Debienne told you about the Phantom of the Opera, did he?

RICHARD:
(Laughing)
Oh, yes, and I just Jack the Ripper on a bar.

MADAME GIRY:
Be careful, Monsieur Richard. Everyone who challanged the Phantom didn't live the other day.

RICHARD:
(Spooky voice)
Oh yes, I'm really scared.

Madame Giry exits.

CHARLES enters from left.

POLIGNY:
(To Charles)
I'm sorry sir. This a particular party. Would you be kind and leave?

CHARLES:
Have my card.

POLIGNY grabs the card.

POLIGNY:
Ah, Vicoumte de Chagny! I'm really sorry. I dind't recognize you. If you came to see the ballet girls rehearsal, you are hours late!

CHARLES:
I dind't came here for the ballet girls. I came here to see Mrs. Daaé.

POLIGNY:
Oh, you're a fan of hers! Well, that seems quiet weird because she never sang to an entire public here, but you must saw here on rehearsals.

CHARLES:
No, Monsieur Poligny. I didn't know Mrs. Daaé was singing here, we've meet years ago. I was working for the French Navy when I met here.

POLIGNY:
Oh, Monsieur. She can't see no one.

On the top of the Grand Staircase, Christine appears and is very beautiful.

SONG: WHEN THE LADY GETS READY FOR THE BALL

BALLERINAS:
When the lady is getting ready for the ball and for the opera,
she's so pretty, she's so sweety... She's so smilly

SORELIE:
Who is this new girl, everyone is talking about?

BALLERINAS:
Who is this new girl, this new diva?
But when the lady gets ready for the ball
She's sweety, she's so pretty like I love

SORELIE/ MEG:
Who is this new girl...

BALLERINAS:
When the lady
