They Gave Me the Wrong Phantom!!

Hi –

The other day, I bought an ancient VHS version of Robert Englund’s “Phantom” for $3.00 from the sale at the local video store. I plucked it right from the shelf when I saw the Freddy-ish cover.

And lo, when I put it in my parent’s VCR, I could only chuckle –

The tape is actually the 1985 version with Jane Seymour and Maximillian Schell.

Oh well. I’m not complaining – I haven’t seen the JS version either, though I’ll continue to keep an eye out for Robert Englund’s as well. Besides, what do I want for $3.00? :)

I got my Leroux French from the Internet, I got my Leroux English version, I got my Butler/Rossum US DVD with foreign language tracks, I got my Charles Dance DVD – I’m a happy gal.

Now if they would just make a wonderful Kay miniseries with a talented unknown playing Christine, I’d be thrilled…

Alors, vas-tu vivre avec moi, ou l’envoie tu dedans sa tombe?

Oh, that sucks...sort of.
I've never seen the version you ended up with, so I can't determine if you missed out truly or not.
I just bought the 1989 version, and fell in love with it. It was really good, an interesting blend of gore and opera.
I have to agree with the mini-series idea. That would be one of thebest things ever if someone actually made a mini-series and cast it well with an unknown.

If you are stil looking for Robert Englund’s “Phantom” I just picked up a new DVD of it at a Wal-Mart in the $5.50 "discount" bin. I guess it didn't sell good there??

You can get the DVD at walmart for 4.oo

Its actually 1983. Its one of those love/hate movies. Alot of people hate it because it veers from the book. But its my favorite version. It actually is really close to the book on several levels. The chandelier scene is phenomenal.

I'd be excited out of my tree!

Seymour/Schell is one of the best Phantom versions ever! I doesn´t stick to the original, but the characters´ personalities are basically the same as in the novel. That version also inspired many other versions like Robert Englund´s, Webber´s and Kay.
People should pay more attention to that tv film, it´s underrated and one of the best Phantoms!

I would love to see the Seymour/Schell version. I don't think it could be too dreadful with Jane in the lead? I haven't see the Hammer Horror version either... I've been pondering the idea of buying the collection.

You know what really sucks...thinking you're getting a romantic musical and ending up with a gore fest--happened to my uncle. THat's how I got my copy.

Well, there are so many "Phantoms," it's an honest mistake. But I could see fans of the original "Phantom" or the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical being really put off by this. Just finding this on IMDb among all the other "Phantoms" was difficult.
