Filmed in Florida??

All these years I thought this was really the suburbs of St. Louis.. I've never been to STL but I always imagined it would look it did in Parenthood..

But Ron Howard shot the whole thing in Florida.. without a single palm tree shown either.. But I did notice a Publix supermarket in the background when Julie and Todd got their pictures.

There were scenes filmed on the campus of the University of Florida. I went to school there, so recognized it right away, which killed the whole STL thing for me right away.

publix killed the whole stl thing for me. i live in miami, where there is a publix every few blocks.

i couldn't tell the difference.. i live in california.. only been to FL twice (never heard of Publix) and have never seen StL, so i bought it.. there's probably more people who DIDN'T catch on, than who did..

I've seen people mention that the license plates are FL rather than Missouri. I'm not sure when this is; probably right at the beginning when you see Gil's family and many other cars leaving the ball game.

I agree, doesn't really matter.

I thought it was very obviously Florida, and never understood why it wasn't just set here. From the Publix, Tinker Field scenes, and the street signs with the oranges at the ends. But then, I'm from the Orlando area so those things would stick out. Kind of like that movie D.A.R.Y.L. when they're pretending it's one of the Carolinas, but it's clearly Orlando. Or Problem Child 2- I think it's supposed to be Illinois, but there are so many Orlando shots.

The photo booth scene was filmed outside the Publix on Memorial Blvd. in Lakeland, Florida. It's become kind of a bad area of town these days, and the Publix is long gone, replaced by a USave.

I figured the movie had more of an "Anytown USA" feel to it and the setting was irrelevant. It didn't really look like Florida, due to the lack of palm trees, plus Orlando's heat and humidity are 90% of the year, even in winter.

Publix, where shopping is a pleasure!

I lived in Orlando at the time the movie was filmed and have been to Showbiz Pizza and Tinker field many times. Orlando doesn't really look like the the coastal area -- there are palm trees but they can easily be avoided with clever camera angles. My neighborhood had zero palm trees. Mostly oak trees and cypress and the homes were New England style.
