i just wanna pre-face this by saying that i usually watch exploitation and slasher flicks, and art house horror. but whenever i watch this flick and hear the grandma talk about how much she digs roller coasters over merry-go-rounds and how she doesn't get the latter, it makes me well up immediately. then when steve martin is at the kids' play and he eases up and the sound of the roller coaster subsides and he just laughs at the mayhem his child started, i tear up full on. can't help it. just find it amazingly poignant and well conceived. don't know why but it gets me every flick in time. dig this flick supremely.

Wow, you got all that from the op tearing up at those scenes? I love the cute little Grannie's speech and the play scene too. I really crack up at the part where Gil's wife says that she thinks Grandma is a genius because of the roller coaster speech, and Gil says "Well if she is such a genius, then why is she sitting in the neighbor's car?".

haha, yeah that was such a good way to cap off the scene. just a nice twist in the road to the way the emotion of the scene is heading.

Yes, that's all I need with my vast knowledge and experience with human psychology. If OP is crying over a scene that was a simple cop out to wrap up Gil's story in a nice little bow and accept the madness his life has become, while giving everyone a great big Happy Ending, OP has some serious psychological problems which I outlined in my previous post.

It's a cute and funny scene, but if someone is crying over it and seeking a deeper meaning that speaks to them, they are broken in the head and need to be fixed. Perhaps Librium might be an effective management tool. But one thing at a time. Go see a doctor before running to the bottle or a gun in the mouth because that is what antisocial types do. Seek attention by hurting themselves or others.
