'He told me he loved me. Oh, they say that...then they come.'

Best line ever is it not?

Followed by Gary walking in on them bashing men. Haha. I love this movie.

My favorite is "Oh mom, back off....the last guy you dated stole our furniture."

Helen had the best lines.

I think what made it funnier is you didn't thing the sentence was over until the long pause.

Gee whiz, Julie, there are so many things about this that bother me I don't know how to separate them.

Love the "gee whiz" and how she says the line sweetly with a smile on her face. LOL!

That scene actually speaks alot to the way Gary was turning out. Being 13 or so and already going through tough teenage boy stuff without another guy around to give him guidance, hearing his mom and sister trashing men. That had to hurt him.

Granted they both had bad experiences with guys. Even if Julie & Gary's dad isn't seen in the film, he's a huge deadbeat piece of sh*t, so I can't blame Helen for that one... and Todd trashing Julie just to be cool in front of his brothers, was pretty jerky too. But you should never negatively stereotype an entire group of people just because of the bad apples, and you really need to be careful what you say around whom.

Helen was going through a tough time and making some mistakes. But I like the bit near the end when she almost-offhandedly confesses to Gary, when he acts surprised about her getting Julie back together with Todd at the racetrack, that of course she'd do that. She wants what's best for her and for Gary. The look on his face...I think that line and the way she says it, as if it's as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning, fixes a whole lot of damage caused by the divorce from both of his parents.

It had been a few years since I saw it until tonight...I just caught that line and snort/laughed. The way she delivered it, subtle and dead-panned was great.

I thought that line was hilarious! This film has some of the funniest lines I have ever seen in ANY comedy ever!

I crack up hard when Julie screams at Todd:
"I wouldn't live with you if the world was flooded with PISS, and you lived in a TREE!"

or

[Ms. Buckman frantically puts away vibrator]
Taylor: "Mommy, what was that thing?!"
Mom: "It was...an electric ear cleaner."
Taylor: "It sure was a big one."
Grandma: "It certainly was!"

[Helen & Grandma leave the room after glimpsing a porn video]
Grandma: "One of those men reminded me of your Grandpa, God bless him!"

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

********SPOILERS AHEAD*****In the scene after Helen discovers what's in Gary's bag, although it's a very deep, powerful scene in a dramatic sense ["All these feelings, you're right to have all these feelings...You're a great kid, you're a great kid, you've just got a lousy dad. You just have to learn how to say the hell with him. Actually that's good advice for me, too. The hell with him!"] there's a really hilarious, unexpected line (one of the several throughout the movie, of course) when she goes on: "I don't know what to say about the tapes. [stuttering awkwardly] Well, you know, I mean, you know, I assume that you're watching them 'cause you're curious about sex, you know, or filmmaking." (Great movie! And far ahead of its time in every way.)
