There wasn't anything in Chile. He was a gambling degenerate and was just stealing the money to fund his gambling addiction. If anything, he was going on the lamb to hide from loan sharks.

Actually I disagree lemonhead. He was a bum yes, and he was in trouble. But his Father offered to straighten it out - as long as Larry got help for his gambling. The Father also told Larry he was going to teach him his business (I think it was hardware) so Larry could take over. Pretty good deal, huh? I would have thought so. But Larry, aside from being a gambler, was an idiot. The type that falls for MLM schemes, quick money hoaxes, and the like. In his mind, he probably thought there really was a big time opportunity in Chile. It would have to have been that because his Father offered to take care of his problem. If the Father said no, I'd have gotten the Hell out of town, too. NO, Larry left cuz he sincerely believed in some BS scheme someone from Chile sold him.

I just saw the movie again tonight, and I didn't get that from the scene. I also had forgotten that Larry's dad didn't end up giving him the money, therefore, he could retire as planned. I think Larry got 3k from him earlier, then right before leaving, he hit him up for another 2k. Larry's whole purpose was to escape. He didn't want those terms his dad had given him, so he was going to flee instead. As soon as his dad suggested he work with him and learn the family business, he suddenly claimed an opportunity in Chili. He was despicable!

Ok, you say you just took another look at "Parenthood". Well, I'll have to take your word for it cuz I haven't seen it in well over 20 years. What I remember is the Father sitting down with Larry and coming up with a solution to his problem (gambling debts). The solution had conditions. At first Larry accepts, then he starts talking about an opportunity in Chile. It is possible Larry made that up, in the moment, to have a reason to get out of dodge. The last thing I remember Larry doing is insinuating he needs $ - if I remember his Dad says something like "Is 3 thousand enough?"? And then Larry gets rid of his child Kool. I know the Father keeps Kool. I don't remember what excuse Larry came up with as to why he couldn't bring his kid to Chile with him.

Something like that, haahahahaha
