the first story

Hey, I just watched the second half of this movie on SBS in Australia, but unfortunately I missed the Japanese bit (which was the one I wanted to see!) and practically the whole of the second story. Can anyone tell me what happens?

Hey what a small world I just finished watching "Mystery Train" on SBS as well! For those outside Australia SBS is featuring a Jim Jarmusch festival over the next few weeks.

Well in the first story, a young Japanese couple arrive in Memphis to pay homage to the "King" Elvis Presley. They visit the legendary Sun Studio and plan to visit Graceland. They spend a night in a sleazy hotel in a rundown part of Memphis. The rooms have no TV and there are Elvis kitsch paintings on the walls. Elvis' influence appears to be everywhere. The couple make love and in the early morning they are awakened by what sounds like a gunshot coming from somewhere in the hotel.

This segues into the second part of the story which is about a young woman from Rome who is in Memphis to attend a funeral. In a diner she runs into a man who tells her about seeing the ghost of Elvis. The young woman spends a night in the hotel and during the course of the night encounters the ghost of Elvis.

Watch it again, as the Japanese story part is the best one, and there's so much about it that can't be described in words. All I can say is that it is a brilliant take on my country as seen through the eyes of foreigners.

I thought the Japanese story was the best part 2. It really pulled you into the film very well, and had the best characters. The sex scene was torrid. The part I liked the least was the last one.

The sex scene was torrid.
Oh, that it was! ;]
