Nick Cave's 'Watching Alice'

I just read the plot of this movie and it reminded me the lyrics of Nick Cave's song "Watching Alice". The thing is that "Watching Alice" was included in a 1986 album (Tender Prey) while the movie was produced in 1989. Does anybody know if there really is a connection between the song and the movie?

It was a book by Georges Simenon long before it was a movie - Nick Cave could have read it.
