a fair few 'panty shots' no?

Anyone uncomfortable with animator's choice on this? seems unnecessary.

reply

It would have only been unnecessary if Kiki was wearing a thong.

Did you really think that when Kiki is flying through the wind and her dress is blowing, that was supposed to be sexual? It's just realistic.

reply

Well no i don't think there was an intention to 'sex up' the heroine, but seeing her young age and the large amount of times she was flying I just think they should of played it safe and giving her pants.

reply

You're a brainwashed moron, wonderlover. This is the problem with political correctness. *beep* just swarm from out the woodwork.

reply

quite common in anime

Thank you for pointing this out. I don't think anyone bothered to realize that those were NOT her underwear showing. It makes me sad how people have to pervert something that meant to be innocent.

No, I think the little girl's legs, panties or bloomers are adorable. The way Miyazaki draws and animates girls is a wonder: they look so weightless and the motion is so ineffably girl-like. Totoro, Kiki, Minoake all appreciate this magical quality of girls. I think it's us Americans made uncomfortable by awareness publicizing possibilities of sex-abuse in the past twenty years. NOw we feel guilty when presented so innocent a scene. I'm old enough to remember adorable innocence without the sexualization. I regret our anxieties intrude in this way.

Somebody here's got a bloomer fetish! 0_o

reply

If you watch the musical movie version of Annie, during some of her dancing scenes, you can see several bloomer shots. They are not in any way sexual or anything, it is just realistic as has been previously stated. She was a little girl in a short dress. Not a big deal.

reply

I agree with you, her bloomers were totally innocent. I hope none of the people who are shocked by this innocent film watch stuff like Najica Blitz Tactics; their heads might explode if they did

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

reply

I'm not familiar with that movie(I'm assuming it is a movie), but I'm guessing it is on the total opposite end of the spectrum from Kiki's Delivery Service. At any rate, I hope they don't either. Don't want any heads exploding. :)

reply

It is a short series*. It is at the opposite end of the spectrum to Kiki, it features panty shots every thirty seconds or so, its a pity as the stories would be suitable for all ages if it weren't for the non-stop fan service. Even though I saw it on offer at a very cheap price I didn't get it as I'd be embarrassed to own such a title

I've always been torn on these sorts of things. For some background, I'm an avowed feminist, who is in the process of wrapping up undergrad. Then it's on to studying for my PhD in Gender Studies, so I take this stuff very seriously and will soon teach it at college for a living. That said, I am definitely not for young girls being sex objects, HOWEVER, I also believe they should have agency, including sexual agency. The best way to put it is: a 13-year old being sexualized is not a good thing, but the girl exploring her sexuality is very good and an important part of growing up. There's a huge difference between those two things. This case is mild at best since Kiki was not sexualized in this film, and the panty shots if you will were not outlandish or unrealistic.

It isn't sexual and they were bloomers. plus she's 13. it's completely natural when you're flying (I assume) Completely innocent

And here's another curse. May all your bacon burn

reply

I've seen it done in other anime. I can't say I've ever really given it much thought, other than the artists were trying to be true to the physical world; wind blowing skirts and stuff like that.

But, you mean there's some other connotation going on there. Probably for some anime, but as a male whose watched anime for many years I've never given it much thought to be honest.

reply

it is sexual, countless animes have panty shots to cater to male audiences. (read: fanservice). this film is another example. this is fact.

reply

That's creepy though, and for it to occur in a childrens' film makes me wonder about your conclusion on this particular movie.

In fact, I just don't think that's the case here.

*EDIT*
Why would you even notice that or bring it up as a topic? I don't get that.

Hey, you know what, I totally dismiss this stupid theory.

Check out "Naussica" or "Castle in the Sky" or even "Princess Mononoke". You'll note a distinct LACK of underwear shots.

Why on Earth ANYONE would notice it in this film is beyond me.

Holy Toledo, what if it were a film about a bald guy wearing a baseball cap, and you constantly saw the guy get his hat blown off. Would you think there was some message about baldness there?

All you people need to get a life.

It's a KIDS' MOVIE.

Damn.

reply

How old are you?

If the answer is >8, you're too old for this "I see England, I see France, I see Kiki's underpants!" obsession.

reply

I thought it was innocent. I know that is a very common thing to have panties flashed in anime but in this movie it wasn't sexual at all. She wore a dress and she flew in the air so it made sense it would fly up from time to time. There were no close ups, no prolonged scenes of her naked. It was just innocent.

reply

Exactly. And we only see them in the last scene, where she's trying to rescue Tombo -- the point being that she was too distracted by, y'know, trying to save her friend's life to take the time to tuck her skirt in.
