Was this originally supposed to be a straight out horror film?

It looks like something Brian Yuzna would've produced and Stuart Gordon would've directed, only watered down to a more family friendsly movie!

This

The Gate

The Monster Squad, etc.

80s kids horror movies were both way more entertaining and more scary than the vast majority of the crap that comes out nowadays.

True to that. The sad thing is that most 80s kids horror films would get watered down to a sappy PG rating if made today.

Goonies wouldn't have said $#!t 100 times.

The Gate wouldn't have shown any gruesome imagery.

Gremlins would be almost all CGI and feel like a XBOX game.

The Monster Squad would've have even the littlest drop of blood in it.

Even Stand By Me (technically NOT a kids' movie due to R rating) would have no F-Bombs or sexual references, and the whole plot about the missing dead kid would be watered down to a lost dog or some foolishness like that.

I guess the point is that these movies were made in just that right time, the 80s.

Now watch Little Monsters get remade by Disney! **sarcasm**
