Why did that principal go for Brian instead of the bully?

During the fight scene shortly after the beginning, why did that principal go for Brian (Fred Savage) instead of the bully? The other was clearly bigger.

reply

Brian was the new kid in school, and the Principal said he needed to learn the rules.

Maybe it's easier for educators to address the symptoms rather than the root of the problem itself. They should investigate the extenuating circumstances, instead of just deciding on the spot who's to blame, and ending there. They usually will NOT do anything about a bullying incident, unless they see the bully in action with their own eyes.

reply

Because the plot demanded it.

Because he was an asshole

reply

Because Brian is the protagonist and odds need to be stacked against him?

reply

Because he could easily have been afraid of the bully himself.
