Apparently there were many, many underwater monster movies made around 1989. I have found these:
The Abyss (I know, not a monster, but this one is said to have started the craze, as the rival studios thought it was going to be a monster flick)

The Evil Below
Leviathan
Lords of the Deep
The Rift (Endless Descent)
Are these all, or does anyone know of any others?
well it's not from '89 but there's Sphere. I hated this movie the first time I saw it but it was much better the second.

When word of mouth spread that james cameron making a movie about aliens underwater, hollywood producers assumed that he was literary making "aliens" underwater. So they scrambled to come up with their own "alien" underwater films to compete, unaware of the kind of film cameron was making.
