Where exactly was Doc at the start of the film?

When Dejesus had his suit problems at the start of the film the Doc wasnt around, but where was he? He mentioned playing golf. Was he able to leave the shack and come and go as he pleased? did he mean video game golf that he was playing in his room on the shack? or was he just being sarcastic and just joking about the golf and he just wasnt in the control room like he was supposed to be? just one of those things i never understood and ive probally seen this movie 30 times.

There is a moment where they are debating whether or not they should join two suits together to increase the pressure in the one that is leaking. The geologists response with "i dont know if it may hurt him". Doc supposedly should have known.
