After Riggs and Rika left the trailer after being shot at, it seems kind of careless for Riggs to drop Rika off at her house. Especially when Riggs knew who was shooting. I would have thought Riggs would have the sense to take Rika to the police station.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this movie, the rest of the lethal weapon series, and other mindless 80's action movies. This part just didn't make any sense to me.
I just finished watching this scene....and hit up IMDB to see what other viewers thought of it. I agree with you. I feel like the script took a complete vacation from reality!
Yeah, I agree. I found the part too odd. I thought Riggs should have taken a lot of security measures because she was technically under the employ of the South African consulate. Hence, she would be traced to the shootout. Riggs knew who was behind the scenes for that. I pretty much blame him for her needless death.
I think many things don't make sense in this film. I agree with you that she at least deserved to make a statement about the shooting at the police station and maybe spend the night there.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame
You've made a good point there. Riggs should have known that the South Africans would be coming for them. Besides that, why didn't they kill Riggs when he was getting into his pickup truck? All of the other cops from that search of the SA embassy were killed outright; though Murtaugh killed the guys that came for him.
At no point do any of the shooters see Rika so it makes sense that he'd think they wouldn't know she was there.
Also, her making a statement at the police station would be pointless due to diplomatic immunity within the context of the movie, so he probably felt that was a bad option too.
Within what needs to happen in the film, it make sense.
Despite this movie having more flaws than the original, this is the only bad scene in the movie to me.
They've just been shot at and Riggs's trailer was turned into Swiss cheese, and he just casually drops her off at her apartment and she's all calm and relaxed like it was a nice evening out.
Even as a child watching this, my reaction was WTF.
Even though i like the film, that's one of the small things i always disliked about it. Apparently, there was a deleted scene where after the shootout at his trailer, Riggs and Rika sneak into the embassy and Rika helps Riggs to put some tracking device on one of the cars belonging to South Africans, which would also explain how Riggs and Murtaugh later find the cargo ship. Then they would go to her house all calm and happy thinking everything's gonna be alright but since Africans saw them (because of the video camera) in the parking lot, they know that Rika is helping him so they ambush them and you know the rest. This scene was never released, although if you check out the "Pulling the Trigger - Expanding the World of Lethal Weapon" documentary from Blu-Ray pack of all four films, at around 08:11 mark you can see some outtakes of Mel and Patsy from this deleted scene.
Ah, just watched this on IFC and was wondering about this scene, but your information about the deleted scene explains things. Also, considering the bad guys were at Riggs' car right after he drops Rika off means they had already been followed. If Riggs decided to drive Rika to the police station or anywhere else the bad guys would have either gotten them both anyways once they stopped or would have made their presence known earlier and run them off the road.
The thing that always gets me is Sam the dog didn't bark to warn Riggs the bad guys were sneaking up on him. He was hiding in the back of the truck. Most dogs I know of would go out of their way to protect their owners from danger.
