Big Bang Theory didn't ruin this movie. They just didn't understand the actual purpose!

Indiana and his father aren't supposed to save the world from the nazi's.
They're supposed to actually find the Holy Grail. The nazi's didn't have the knowledge to succeed in finding the Grail.

So take Indiana out of the equation and the Holy Grail is never found.
The world is robbed of a great adventure story.

BBT was talking about the original Indiana Jones i.e. Raiders of the Lost Ark, and they're 100% correct; Indy is superfluous to the plot and outcome.

reply

Except without Indy they'd never find the Medalion and therefore never would have found the Ark.

reply

Exactly, the only reason the medallion was even in play was because Toht followed Indy to Nepal.

The Germans were already excavating Tanis - even without the medallion showing the exact spot the ark was located, they would have found it eventually. The medallion only saved months or maybe a year before the Nazis discovered the ark.

reply

You're talking about a pretty large area. I think it might have been longer than that.

Not at all. Hitler wanted the ark and Indy ended up with it and brought it to the U.S.

reply

Exactly my thought.

If Indy wasn't there, after the Nazis who open the Ark are melted by the Angels of Death or whatever they are, it would have stayed in Nazi hands.

reply

And you could just bet that the next experiments the Nazis would have tried on the Ark would have been conducted by Jews..

reply

Do you ever worry about Germany trying to conquer the world again? They are kind of histories linesteppers. At least in the 20th century.

I would say no to Germany, nor the Japanese. It's kind of funny to think that way after the wholesale brutality they inflicted on an otherwise peaceful world but the lessons of Japan and Germany have taught us something that we must take into the rest of this century - certain societies can become benevolent and productive and provide a wonderful life for their citizens after being beaten in war and given the opportunity.

That was the lesson of the 20th century and worked for the Axis nations but as we found out, not all nations/societies/cultures respond the same way. While we did the right thing in Germany, Italy, and Japan, it backfired spectacularly in other countries like Afghanistan. Some peoples just don't respond to civility.

I don't trust Islamists, never will, and in my opinion the inevitable destruction of civilization will start in the Middle East.
