If the ant hadn't died.....

...what would have happened when they got back to the house and were put back to normal? Would they have just sent their new friend back out into the wilderness of the lawn with a nice farewell pat? Would it have tried to stay? That good-bye scene would have been just as sad as the ant's death.

I forget - was the ant alone and lost from its nest when they found it?

They could have done the original ending as depicted in the novelization. In this ending, Wayne brings the kids to another conference where he works, and Professor Frederickson still doesn't believe him, then Ron burst through the door on the back of the now enlarged ant which begins chasing Frederickson around.
