They wouldnt be able to eat for the same reason they couldnt breathe: The size of the molecules would be to large to be absorbed into the blood. So, maybe they actually could EAT, but it wouldnt do them any good 'cos they cant digest it.
As for speaking, the vocal chords wouldnt work at that scale. But hey-I still managed to enjoy the film- I admitted to being pedantic.
what your saying makes sense tho, i figured tho that being shrunk would make you die of suffocation, but i'm not sure abotu the speaking bit tho, the eating part sorta makes sense tho, and i don't care if you're pedantic, i love finding mistakes in movies to

The shrinking process removes empty space between atoms but the same amount of atoms are still there.
So the kids would still weigh the same as they did when they were full size and due to their much smaller surface area it would be like a human being standing one foot on a pin.
They would sink into the ground until they reached rock.
Same goes for picking them up in your hand they would cut right through you with their 5-9 stone on a pinhead.
I'll say it again. Suspension of disbelief.

shareI don't know what kind of molecules you are breathing, but they aren't going to be large enough to effect your ability to breathe. Oxygen molecules aren't large enough to look like very fine beads when you are standing at a quarter of an inch. As for food, though, it would be a bit difficult to eat minute portions of food. The diversity of processed food would be difficult for a quarter inch person to be able to each for their nutritional requirements.
shareto be 'nit-picky' and focus on the small, unimportant little details. Interesting, maybe English is not your mother tongue? Its used in America as much as here in england..
sharePedantic refers to being a nitpicker who can't suspend disbelief and enjoy a film for what it is. For example, I have a cousin who questions how Wile E. Coyote survives cliff falls. Any normal person knows that cartoons defy all logic. This film is a simple family flick which defies scientific logic, but it is okay in this case. If one wants scientific accuracy, he should go read a Michael Crichton novel. But I digress.
