Almost 20 years...
Man, this makes me feel old. Can you believe that in a year and a half this movie will be 20 years old? I was 9 when it came out and I really liked it...It's also the first movie I ever saw a "Behind the scenes" special on. I watched it again a few years ago and it held up pretty well. Sure some of the special effects and jokes are dated, but I completely forgot about the strained-marriage part of the story and that added some drama that didn't feel forced. I thought the characters had heart. Even when they had stereotyped/cookie-cutter personalities, they still had some development and growth. Each one of them evolved. So many kids' movies have smart-mouthed kids that make the grow-ups look like idiots and some goal is achieved without there being much character development--very few lessons learned (I don't mean in a moral sense, but in a character-learns-something-about-self sense) Every main character in this movie winds up a different character than he or she was at the beginning.
I glanced at the back of the DVD and saw there were no special features (except the Roger Rabbit cartoon that was originally released with it in the theater). It would be cool if they release a 20th anniversary one to add SOME kind of behind-the-scenes featurette...even if they just put that 1/2 hour one I saw back in '89 on there.
