The Original script

Had 5 kids shrunk but one of the kids died during the water sprinkling scene. Wouldnt that had been a lil too much for a Disney movie, im glad they came to their senses and changed that script. Although times were different back then, i mean that had a character smoking cigarette in this movie, which totally unacceptable in a Disney movie nowadays.

Here in Europe, in the 1980s, we had a very popular children's series from Germany called "Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl" which was about an old man finding and befriending a fiendish little goblin, who causes all sorts of trouble. In that series, many of the adult characters were smoking, and also constantly drinking. Meister Eder often hanged out in the pub with his friends, drinking beer by the wholesome (it was in Germany, afterall).

So, I guess, it was still more strict in America back then, than here in the Old Continent.

You can see where they replaced that storyline with the ant dying. Something to tug at the heartstrings, without being dark. I agree, killing a child in this movie would have totally changed the tone of the movie. They made the right choice.
