Theory: Eddie made the movie to assist his colleagues

I personally think that this movie was made by Murphy for the purpose of securing a paycheck for his comedic icons/friends.

I think it was noble of him.

Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx were not having their phones ring off the hook with offers. In fact, it was Redd's last movie and I believe Richard's last significant role.

Take a look at some of the other cast. Call it the 'Schindler's List' of movie-making.

You are correct . . .Redd Foxx was getting his clock cleaned by the IRS and Richard Pryor wasn't doing so well professionally at that time. Eddie even helped create the ill-fated, "Royal Family" sitcom that Redd Foxx was on in the early 90s, and paid for Redd Foxx's funeral. . .this movie was a cool example of collective economics - inside and outside of the narrative of the film.

That could have been part of the motivation, definitely, but whatever the motivation, the final result was an excellent film, in my opinion.

Let me ask one question. What was the target audience for this film?

reply

Why would I know? I didn't make it. You'd have to ask the producers, writers, etc., and hope that they remember what they had in mind. Also, they probably didn't all have the same ideas, so there wouldn't just be one answer.

If you're asking who it would appeal to, there is also a wide variety of answers, but no guarantees (for example, we can't guarantee that it would appeal to Eddie Murphy fans, or Danny Aiello fans, or gangster film fans, etc.).

I was just hoping that you or someone else knew towards whom the studio targeted this movie. For instance, Tyler Perry movies do not target 35+ white females in Utah.

You'd always have to ask the folks who made something what target audience they had in mind, and as I mentioned, there wouldn't just be one answer, as movies involve many different persons.
