I never watched the entirety of The Sound of Music either. Just seen a few minutes here and there.

My parents made me watch Sound of Music as a kid so I knew the reference. They also made me watch Driving Miss Daisy and Places in the Heart as a kid too. Hated all of them as a kid. I like them now. At least the later 2. I haven't seen Sound of music since I was a kid but I generally don't care for musicals.

If you haven't seen the Sound of Music, you are either a Millennial, or Black. The Sound of Music, Marry Poppins, Parent Trap, Wizard of Oz, should all be mandatory viewing before you turn 10.
