The runaway carriage

HOW did they do that? I never really look at these movies and try to think HOW they pulled off the effects they did, but I saw that again the other day and it occurred to me, HOW did they do that? Did they have a remote control carriage they could operate off camera or something?

reply

They just pushed the carriage down the street and the camera operator tried to keep up.

I always figured it was remote controlled some how. That's the most obvious way anyhow. The only other think I can think of is it's being pulled along by a cable of some kind which is taken out afterwards.

I think you're on to something. At some points the movement of the carriage looks oddly deliberate, like if you were steering a remote control toy. And I think we're supposed to see that the carriage is being manipulated by the slime, not that it's just free falling. It's the same as when the slime gets the toaster or Statue of Liberty to "walk."

reply

They just pushed it and hoped for the best!

reply

It was motorised and driven by a stunt driver. The cart was much bigger than you realise and the cars it passes are fake, except on far shots, then it's just a miniature using stop motion and weights

I wished I could find it but there was a behind the scene picture of the carriage with the camera setup connected to it and them pushing it for the close ups shots looking at Oscar as it's rolling.

I think that they had something that was already posted that was done in the further away shots for the scene.
