For a comedy this movie had some creepy moments. First off, the main villains face is made of a nightmare of ugly. The sewer filled with pink slime was made me nervous and still does. The monster ghost standing between the pillar attacking people was intimidating. But most of all was when that lady's mink coat came to life.
I found when Janosz floated by the window to get Oscar and his eyes glow red wad pretty creepy. Also the souls from the Titanic so I'm with you on the topic
I loved the river of slime, it was really cool & imaginative and some great sfx. I also thought the mink coat coming to life was hilarious, probably the funniest part of the movie for me was seeing them come out the coat and then scurry away down the street haha.
What I personally found creepy was when Janosz's eyes glowed and when all those heads on sticks are seen when they're in the underground - pretty intense for a PG. Also, the flying maid taking the baby (janosz in drag) was eerie as hell, too. Vigo in general was pretty imposing - this movie has the right balance of creepy and comedy.
Imdb message boards - kick someone's ass on the first day, or become someone's bitch.
Janosz as a nanny was really creepy the first time I saw this movie, those red eyes, yikes! The Titanic scene was beyond creepy, seeing the ghosts from the Titanic was a bit unsettling.
Vigo's face is definitely creepy stuff. Just finished watching this after many years, the scariest thing for me is that scene where Ray & Egon are developing photos from their visit to the museum and they run one through a special treatment to bring out some hidden details. The audience only gets to see the result for a second and it's zoomed in so close that the whole thing isn't visible, but god damn if that image of a hideously deformed Vigo head suspended over a river of slime isn't nightmarish. That'sthe idea. It's a horror comedy. They were very popular and it's that atmosphere of real horror mixed with humor that they did not understand with the remake.
It does have some really creepy moments - the heads on sticks, nanny Janosz, the moment Vigo's face starts coming out the painting. But it's also very funny too. A good balance of the two elements.
Of I'd been the scared type, for some reason, when they hear the ghost train at first thats kind of scary, when it stops and starts again, the tension was palpable. Also the heads on sticks and the live bathtub when it tries to grab Oscar
The subway sequence (the ghost train, the creepy voice calling out Winston's name, the impaled heads), the dark room scene (NOT for the pyrophobic or claustrophobic), but for me, the grand prize goes to the climax (Vigo possessing Ray - still can't watch the whole climax without turning my head away).
Totally forgot the darkroom scene and how it did scare me as I wasn't a fan of fire as a kid lol. Also felt a bit scared when they fell into the river of slime. Yuck!
