What am I missing, I just ordered it on Netflix and moved it to the top of my queue...they say it's available now, I should have it by Tuesday. Unless you need to buy it, I'd try them.

It's VERY common for DVDs to go out of print just before being re-released in special editions.

*Edit* I haven't seen the DVD being sold anywhere for under $90. That's insane! I'd like to own this one. Does anyone know about a re-release? This is not some obscure or unsuccessful film that no one has heard of. It was a modest hit that earned Oscar nominations, and it's arguably Michelle Pfeiffer's trademark role.

hehe here in Sweden my father bought a copy for whopping $2. OK, it was the swedish translated title "de fantastiska Baker boys" (on the cover) but the movie is the same.

I knew I screwed up the minute I didn't buy it when I had the chance. I'm a DVD fanatic, I knew that film was very hard to locate, I work in New York, so I have access to a ton of video stores, for some reason that dvd could NOT be found anywhere!, anywhere at all. One day I came across it at Virgin megastore in Union Square about 9-10 months ago, I knew it was a rare bird, knew it was either out of print, or just about to go out of print, but being a complete schmuck I balked at the $29.95 price tag. Too much, I told myself, now I'm kicking myself in the ass, because I knew it was a tough one to find, and I had it, and damn, did I blow that one!!!!

Jeff Bridges on JeffBridges.com says he recently recorded a commentary track with Beau for a new DVD. I can't find it on any release schedule, but I would assume we'll have a new edition within a year.

Bought it at Best Buy 3 days ago for $6.99.

In Mexico senor, these are the years of sadness.

I recently bought a copy of the DVD at a Best Buy in West Palm Beach, FL, for $9.99. :) No kidding.

reply

I just bought it from Amazon.ca, through an outside seller.

You can get it on ebay from a South Korean source for around $10 plus shipping. I just got my copy, it works fine on a US player (though the special features are in Korean text) and doesn't appear to be a bootleg. Yes the movie is definitely worth it - and as a pianist I'd say it's one of the best and most convincing movies about pianists ever made.

I got mine on amazon last week for £2.75, which I think is about 4 american dollars, or maybe I'm counting the wrong way.

It's getting a re-release on Jan.30th. Amazon has it for around $10...

reply

After an extensive search I managed to find a copy at a liquidators for a whopping $7.99.

The Jan 30 2007 re-release is 2 minutes shorter for playing time, and offers NO extras. Weird. Why buy it?

So what's happened to the Jeff/Beau Bridges commentary that Jeff himself said on his website that he recorded? When is someone going to do justice to this fine film on DVD?...

reply

I just bought it at KMART for 9.99, and they had several copies.
I didn't check to see if it was new release or an older version.
Watched it last night after not seeing for several years.
It's still GREAT !

reply

It's in the $5 section at Walmart, if you can find it.
