Drugstore Sequel In The Works....

EMO FILMS AND DAN YOST PREPPING 'DRUGSTORE COWBOY' SEQUEL

Daniel Yost, co-writer of the 1989 indie film classic "Drugstore Cowboy," is prepping a followup for Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens' EMO Films. The award-winning original, co-written and directed by Gus Van Sant, centered on an ill-fated, heroin-driven Bonnie and Clyde, portrayed by Kelly Lynch and Matt Dillon, financing their habit by robbing drugstores in the Pacific Northwest. The pic was based on the acclaimed novel by James Fogle.

The follow-up, as yet untitled, will revisit the characters in a modern-day setting. Yost wrote the screenplay. The sequel novel, written by Fogle and Yost, is presently being shopped to publishers starting this week by 928 Talent Management.

EMO Films recently executive produced the Columbine-inspired "April Showers." Upcoming projects include a sequel to the Oscar-winning "Road to Perdition," and "Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines," with director John Landis.

Isn't He dead in the end? He definitely dies in the book. Van Sant says that in his mind he's dead in the film too.

reply

Just saw it again, no clue of he really dying. He just said that he was going to the biggest drugstore in the world

reply

the biggest drugstore in the world being the hospital of course. i never got the impression that he died in the end either, but rather felt justified in going on another run.

reply

He died in the book

reply

Some might say that because the ambulance lights/siren are not in use that he may well be dead.

reply

I haven't read the book but in the film he didn't die. Although Gus attempts to leave it somewhat ambiguous.

reply

I never saw him as being dead - and thought the ending was kind of ambiguously uplifting. But the only way a sequel would ever work is to bring back Matt Dillon as the protagonist/focal point of the film. Otherwise it's just another attempted cash-in on something bizarrely non-commercial (at least nowadays) in the first place.

I hate Hollywoodspeak.

reply

What will it be about? I cannot think of a plotline for it that would actually work.

Bob teams up with a street-wise 9 year old girl and they solve mysteries, but Bob discovers that the greatest mystery of all is a woman's heart when he reconnects with Nadine. Nadine loved junk, but she was no tramp. That's why when Rick found enlightenment through the TIME CUBE, she went solo.

Portland, Oregon - 2010

NADINE enters the drugstore and immediately looks around the store, checking for staff and security. BOB and BROOKLYN are looking at coloring books.

Is it with different people? If it was a remake, I think James Franco would be a good choice for Bob. He looks almost exactly like Matt Dillon did, but he'd have to act a lot tougher than he normally acts in movies.
