The Play sucked

The Play Neil was in was awful. Just saying.

You speak as if you saw the entire play? Only 1 minute of the play was shown in the film. A midnight summer's dream is probably my favourite play ever. To me, that's William Shakespeare best work. I think Romeo and Juliet is overrated.

reply

That uncle *beep* doesn't even explain why it sucked. Yeah, we only see a bit of it. Actually, here's what we see:
1. Beginning of Act 2, Scene 1 with Puck's introduction and the fairy, which is cut down.
2. Lysander and Hermia in the woods just before Puck comes in and gives Lysander the love potion by mistake.
3. Puck gathering the magic flower (not in script, but I guess they wanted to show it).
4. The fairies around Bottom with his ass head sleeping and Titania comforting him.
5. Puck's closing speech of the play.

Yeah you should stick to Need for Speed movies.

First of all, it isn't the whole play we see. Second, it is Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Why does it suck? You don't like Shakespeare?

reply

U bring up an interesting point

All this fuss over neil wanting to be an actor and was he any good in the first place??? the answer is maybe mediocre

Robert Sean Leonard is a mediocre actor as well

reply

I thought he was pretty good, especially in the scene where he talks about his character to the fairy.

i would have asked for a ticket refund.

midsummer Night's dream is a pretty silly play, and not the best one for an all boys school to put on - all those fairies etc. Something more manly, like Henry V or Julius Caesar, would have been better.

The play was produced and performed at Henley Hall, an all-girls school.

When Neil first finds out about the play, he mentions it's at Henley Hall. I don't think the film explains what Henley Hall is, but a deleted scene reveals that it's Whelton Academy's "sister school" and that Ginny Danburry (Chet's sister) attends it.

You got your mind right, Luke?

Good answer. Also worth noting: there are actual living females in the play, as seen on screen.

In DPS Part 2, Chet has a change of heart and ends up playing Puck in a tutu (;-p). And the kid who betrayed Keating changed his name to Donald Trump.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)

reply

Yes, that deleted scene with Ginny also shows us why Chris goes to the play herself-because Ginny is her friend and she is in the play.

reply

That deleted scene left a lot of questions that confused me the first time I saw it (I saw it four times at the theater when it first came out). Things mentioned later that made no sense, such as...

Who the heck is Ginny Danbury
Who the heck is Chet Danbury
Why exactly is Chris and why was she at the Danbury's house
What the heck is Henley Hall

Yeah, the scene drags a tad when they show it on tv, but it was an important one.

It's a HIGH SCHOOL production, people! It takes years of experience to handle that language and iambic pentameter well. You can't carp because you're not seeing the next Olivier!

reply

’The play's the thing'. It hardly matters whether it didn't knock anyone out. The fact is that if you have the solid backdrop of a beautiful, prestigious school, that is itself part of the backdrop of your production and not being stunning can be seen as admirable intellectual reticence.

Anyway, it's like saying the play in Hamlet sucked. In the grand scheme of things, it's where and to who it happened that most matters at large. That's life. Find a supportive posse or hang around prestige.

reply

Why bother?

Thank you
