From page 227 of Avon Book's paperback edition:

"Maybe we do have an afterlife, but not quite in the way tradition suggests. Maybe you and I are the larvae and the visitors are human beings in the mature form. Certainly, we are consuming our planet's resources with at least the avidity of caterpillars on a shrub."

That quote was in the movie? Not in my version/copy of the movie! Hmm. But I do remember a quote like that from the book. I have thought before "what if the "visitors" are humans in a more advanced form- us after we "die", ect- from another dimension..." who knows. All speculation. Fun speculation.
