Was this or not?

Just looking for simple thoughts or opions here, if you watched any of the bonus features on the dvd you know the director says somewhere that the alien face from the book/movie became an icon, surely you've noticed all those little alien peripherals/gimmicks like the dolls, posters, keychains, etc. that closely resemble the same figure of the book or movie, so was this coincidence or did Whitley start something that led to that particular alien face becoming part of the 90's culture?

reply

No, this face was the alien face reported by Betty and Barney Hill after their "Alien Abduction Experience" in the 60s. Interestingly, a few nights prior, "The Outer Limits" had shown an episode with an alien having this face. After that, most alien abductees reported seeing this face.

Oh, hmm.. I've little wondered why there was alien imprinted merchandise widely available in the 90's, maybe it's just me.

greys(zeta reticulli), though the supposed survivors of roswell were said to have looked"slighlty" different if not extremly similar.

In the Travis Walton film, "Fire In the Sky," the greys are shown as looking gnome-like -- sort of like E.T. However, on the spaceship Walton was shown to also run into some things he thought were space suits, which looked like they would produce the greys' appearance: the smooth skin and large, black eyes.

D.B. Sweeney was terrific as Walton in that film. Sweeney is so underrated.

I was listening to the radio show "Coast to Coast AM" a while ago, and they had a guest speaker talking about greys. He said that there's a theory that greys might not be the actual aliens, that they might actually be biological robots (automatons) created by the aliens and sent here to perform their work so the actual aliens don't have to risk their lives for the mission.

BS.

This is the oldest appearance of such an image.

according to some, aliens who appeared to be similar to the iconic image on the front cover of communion were a part of the popular imagination for over a hundred years. at least since the time of the aurora, texas "encounter." so people "knew what the creatures were supposed to look like" for quite some time.

It may be the oldest appearance in public, but there were reports of encounters with Greys earlier for about a decade prior. Budd Hopkin's Missing Time came out 5 years before Communion, detailing his work with abductees. It took several sittings with the artist to get that image correct. There is a book out now with a man who claims to have been abducted his whole life and is an artist. Its a picture book. He became aware of his abductions in 87. http://www.amazon.com/Love-Alien-Purgatory-Fantastic-Huggins/dp/1933665432/ref=cm_cr-mr-title

Anyone knows the first movie, series or short that shows this type of alien??

In reply to the "Outer Limits" post about how Betty and Barney Hill may have gotten the alien image from that:

There are cave paintings of these grey aliens that date back to hundreds if not thousands of years. Your point on Outer Limits being the answer to the Betty and Barney Hill case is not true. The image of the greys have been around far longer than most people think. You can google this information, which you should have done before you said that.

If you don't believe in aliens and UFOs thats fine, its a free country. Just remember that there are those of us out there that do believe in them.

Well the ET in Close Encounters does look similar..but yeah he popularized the honed image.

Movies_For_Life don't know how you worked that out considering the movie and book both came out in the 80's?and like Masters said it came out that description back in the 60's

Berry said she saw little guys with Jimmy Durante noses and black hair, and that she dreamed about them after the 9-19-61 "incident" and told Barney all about them. It was only when Barney went under hypnosis where he recalled the story Betty had told him countless times(which was right after the aforementioned "Outer Limits" episode) that he came out saying they were what we now call "The Grays."
