US theatrical timeframe?

Wikipedia says it was released in the US in August 1989.
I seem to remember going to the movies for my birthday June 1990. I think most of us wanted to see Gremlins 2, but two friends were afraid their mom would get mad, so we saw Milo & Otis instead.

Is it possible it would have still been playing in June 1990?
Maybe it opened small and grew by word of mouth?

My memories could just be mixed up, too.
I was pretty sure the next year I saw Terminator 2 for my birthday, but it came out in July 1991. Maybe I delayed going just for this movie or just went because I wanted to see it.

According to Box Office Mojo, it was released to theaters twice: Once in August 1989, and then again in June 1990. I don't know why the studio did this, but both Wikipedia and your memories are correct.

Your mind isn't mistaken. I went to see it then as well. Usually, when films are produced or directed by Japan, the release date is delayed about a year, so I am not surprised this had two release dates.
