I love true stories, and I was wondering, what are the names of the real soldiers played by Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn, and where are they now? Also, does anyone know of where I can find some pictures of them? Also, what was the name of the girl? Anyone know of any photos of her? Tell me where I can find them. Renee Findley
There was just a two-part documentary on BBC Radio 4, "The My-Lai Tapes". It gave a complete account of the massacres in My Lai, Binh Tay and My Khe, the subsequent investigation, and the Pentagon's cover-up.
The two programs aired on 4/22 and 4/29/08. Here's a website connected to the broadcast; you may be able to find a length where you can purchase a tape, or acquire a transcript.
This astonishing site still has the BBC audio, though the BBC itself only makes it available for podcasts for a week:
The soldier who was played by Fox is actually named Dennis Bunning. In the audio in the link above, he says in testimony, [almost word-for-word],
"They were raping girls as young as 12. I would come up to a guy, 'cause I'm pretty big, and say, 'leave that girl alone.' About five guys came to me and said, 'Bunning, you leave us alone or we'll kill you.'"
I'll warn you: this documentary is depressing, and harrowing.
I've always had a huge respect for dePalma; now, even more so. He dared to take this movie to Hollywood -- a story that our country wouldn't face in 1968... or 1989... or now.
I've gotten some productive results on Google, searching on
"my lai" "dennis bunning"
Image searches link me to (apparently) Vietnamese-language sites covering the massacre, but nothing that looks like a likely portrait of Mr. Bunning.
This film isn't about the My Lai massacre. It's about the "Incident on Hill 192", which happened two years earlier. As far as I'm aware, Casualties of War is more or less a direct retelling of the actual incident.
Huh??????????????? Dennis Bunning was at My Lai. This movie is about Sven Ericksson's experience. They are very different, and difficult to confuse....
It amazes me how some people will take the time to write long posts on the IMDB that are completely inaccurate- I can never tell if they are actually that dumb or just trying to mislead people.
As far as I remember,Mai Lai was a separate well known massacre where as this was known as the incident on Hill 192. Ericksson-whatever,his name may have been, was not his real name. He is still in hiding from the original 4 soldiers, all 4 of which were long since released and also had their names changed. There can be no pictures of a poor Viet girl rape victim since her decaying corpse was found in the jungle a month after her murder thanks to the aid "E." The real mother and sister appealed to some S. Viet soldiers to find the kidnapped daughter and the mother was killed within days by the Viet Cong as a collaborator. The sister was killed a few days after that. So the victim's family was wiped out. The fine upstanding soldiers-well,they got better lawyers and it turns out their trials were "fair." So the one person to tell the truth,to refuse to do evil, is in hiding. And that,as they say,is the rest of the story. Isn't it always?

I am reminded of people who ask questions about something that I can quickly find the answer to by using google and wikipedia. Sure, not guaranteed to be correct, but correct enough often enough. Why spend 5 minutes typing up a question on the IMDb that can be researched in 3 minutes ?
"Why spend 5 minutes typing up a question on the IMDb that can be researched in 3 minutes"
Technically, anything said on IMDB can be googled....so really, message boards on IMDB are pointless if you are coming at it from that point of view....it is a place to discuss.
Agreed. IMDB is an appropriate forum for these sorts of information, as perhaps someone like me would not be googling My Lai or the supposedly true story behind the story.
And, even when someone makes a mistake. It's no big deal to pick up the slack and help a brother out.
I find it insulting whenever someone says go read it yourself because then what good are you? If someone asks you a question, you should answer it in my opinion, and not tell them to go look it up themselves.
Erikkson spoke about their group's case and story during their viet war period in 1960-63 or 1950-53, about his head (which film called SERGENT TONY MEASERVE) and the whole group (Diaz) had done on a viet girl (victim) and how they killed the girl finally, how the army punish the 4 people except erikkson (as he reported to the head, so erikkson is innocent and no crime)
