why MJF would take a film that has rape scene
why would he choose such kind of *beep* film that has serious rape scene like this one and even willing to act erikkson.
Perhaps he was afraid of being typecast? Not every actor is content with playing the same type of role repeatedly. Plus, Erickson is an intriguing character and I'd say it's a more challenging role than Maserve.
if you speak serious film, a Frighteners Frank Bannister is already enough.
Frighteners came out in 1996. This film was released seven years ealier, so that argument is invalid.

before Penn's in the credits, so Fox got
top billing on this film.

Because MJF is the ultimate "Good Guy" all throughout the mid 80's to early 90's and he plays it again in this movie.
With all the horrible things that went on around him, he managed to be the "Good Guy" and you even ended up feeling sorry for him because he couldn't be the hero and save the day. It was a great job of casting and even better performance. I agree with the other posts, this was the best role he ever done.

1) He probably wanted avoid being typecast as the perpetually teenage "funny kid" from Family Ties, Back to the Future, Teen Wolf... which is why he did COW and Bright Lights, Big City.
2) He was effected by the script and thought it was an important story worth being a part of.
And The Frighteners isn't a "serious" drama, either; It's a comedy/supernatural horror movie.
