It's actually a good movie...
At least for me. I don't know why a lot of people hate it much. And MJF delivers the best performance of his career on this.

shareProbably, the most overrated film of the 80s, but I'm glad you liked it.

IMDb users rate it ' 7.0 '. That's overrating it in my book. I'm being generous by giving it a ' 5 '. But, that's the kind of tripe that the American Sheeple eat up. Two hours of scenery chewing.

You're right on both points. The reason that they don't mean that much is because of the age group that rates the films. In fact, the whole ' 250 ' list is pretty much a joke. If you ask most of the people who have rated the top 250 films if they've ever seen any films that were released before they were born, you'd probably get some pretty dumb looks out of them. That's sad. I don't have a Netflix account or subscribe to any service that streams or mails films to people, but from what I've read, there are over 100,000 titles available for people to rent. Also, if you live in an area where there's a pretty decent library system, you can borrow [ a lot ] of wonderful films and have access to a lot more through intra-library loans. It's sad what today's viewers limit themselves to. I'd say that there are perhaps two films in that top twenty that are worthy of being there. I went through the list and I personally, wouldn't put at least 80% of those films on the list. I find the ridiculous placement of some masterpieces a travesty, and how several other masterpieces are conspicuously missing. You can get pretty much of an idea of those I'm referring to by looking at my personal film ratings.

I've never seen ' The Dark Knight ' and don't plan on it, unless Marisa Tomei invites me over for dinner and insists that we watch it. I do however, feel that Shawshank is a fine film. I would put it on the 250 list, maybe in the top 150 or higher. Darabont's other [ so-called ] masterpiece, The Green Mile, I wouldn't waste my time with. Plus, I've never been a big fan of Hanks. I admire him as a person, though.

Just an added note to my reply of 3 hours ago: if I worked for IMDb and could offer my input to the powers that be, I would make a suggestion that no film should be on the 250 list unless it was at least 10 years since it's release; more ideally 20 years.
