why did they have flags on the boats when the Kong were throwing explosives and shooting them up, especially when some of the crews were on specialised missions?

the "kong" weren't throwing explosives, that gunboat was jit by friendly fire, well to be exaclt the VC supply boat exploded and that explosion hit the patrol boat which then blew up for some reason...
