Why did Hatcher get a longer sentence than Meserve?

Can anyone tell me why Hatcher got a longer sentence (15 years hard labour) than Meserve (10 years hard labour and a dishonourable discharge)?

I understand why Clark, the guy who tried to kill Eriksson, got a life sentence (besides an attempted murder, which he presumably got the life sentence for, he seemed to be the most active, even more so than Meserve, in the abuse of Than Thi Oanh, and just seemed the most repellent in general, even more so than the loathsome Meserve), but I'm not sure why Hatcher's part in this evil act was thought to merit five more years than Meserve.

Don't get me wrong. They're all scum. But I'm just curious about the sentence discrepancy.

That is weird.
Maybe because of his rank though I would hope that that would go against him.

In the end though hatchet was acquitted which also doesn't make sense

ALL those sentences were completely f'd in the extreme. Pathetically and pitifully lenient slaps on the wrist they basically all were. Now Clark's sentence would've been a case of justice being served properly, if it hadn't shamelessly been reduced to a few pathetic years in prison. ALL should've been given life sentences if there were any true justice in the world(which of course there obviously isn't just going by this single case).

Wasn't Hatcher the soldier who stabbed her behind the tracks?

It was Clark (Don Harvey) who stabbed the girl behind the tracks using the big knife he got for a present earlier.

Hatcher openly admitted to raping the young girl when asked directly by the prosecutor, whereas the rest of the accused were ambiguous in their answers.

Arguably, the others should therefore have gotten longer sentences for not admitting their own parts in the rape. There was no reasonable doubt since they were all found guilty.

That said, they're all scum and I don't feel sorry for any of them. My argument isn't that Hatcher deserved a lower sentence so much as Meserve deserved a higher one.

I fully agree that Meserve deserved a more harsh sentence than the one which Hatcher received, since it was Merserve who thought up and orchestrated the entire plan for his squad to actively go out and abduct the young woman for the sole purpose of raping and later killing her. So Meserve was essentially the leader of the gang rape, as well as the one who later ordered his men to kill her.

Clark got the life sentence because he actually killed her with the knife, not for just trying to kill Erickson.

Hatcher probably got more than Meserve because he was included with Clark in the attempted murder of Erickson.
