Teds dad was right

If you are a dad, and your kid is failing school, completely stupid, and lacking in any realistic goals, you are doing the right thing by showing him some structure and discipline. Military school is exactly what should have happened to him.

I disagree, I think a military school would have been really bad for Ted, it would have taught him to do what he was told at the price of ruining his good nature and cheerful tempermeant.

And that''s without taking the pervy comandant into account...

reply

Sure, but he didn't know he'd turn out to be mankind's saviour. From the perspective of a dad, his kid was going nowhere.

Some sort of "academic boot camp" or tutoring might have been more to the point, especially if started far earlier and if Bill didn't attend go as well. Military school would be too harsh for a good-natured slacker, it'd break his heart and good nature and probably his dormant musical talent, without imparting any ambition or work ethic.

Or at least, a military school that wasn't run by a total perv who was after Ted would do more harm than good, if you factor in the perv commandant seen in the second movie you cheer for Ted to keep on being Ted!

reply

Yeah, I agree. Military school was way over the top.

I'm not saying his dad should sit round and do nothing, but Ted was only failing history. It's not like he was out doing drugs, beating people up and robbing old ladies. Maybe some extra tutoring or something like that would've been more appropriate.

Also, why has his dad left it until now? He's clearly not been doing well at school for some time. Why wait until shortly before important exams and say: "By the way, if you fail I'm sending you to military school"?

Ted's dad was meant to represent the sort of parent who favoured punishment even when encouragement and help were better suited.
