deloreon vs phonebooth

I know their from two seperate movies but which is the better overall of the two doc brown's Deloreon or rufus's phonebooth

better/faster travelling would have to go to the Deloreon.

the phonebooth was way to claustrophobic

the phonebooth was way too jerky and that damn antanae was so unreliable more defective.

the deloreon is also way cooler to look at on the inside

reply

The advantage of the phone booth is that if you ended up in a cave somewhere, you wouldn't need to get up to 88MPH in order to get out. Also less chance of hitting a wall, cliff or lake on entry. And you wouldn't need to fuel up your phone booth before going anywhere.
It's also a lot easier to effect repairs with bubblegum or tree sap than to know exactly when a bolt of lightning is going to strike or access plutonium.

I'll sacrifice cool and speed for ease and general reliability.

nicely said. phonebooth does well at most things. Although it can get cramped it can be easily repaired with common items like bubblegum. Speed has its disadvantages too as you said crashing, damage and room to travel.

reply

On the flipside, it's hard to pick up chicks in a phone booth,.... unless you pay $5.99 for the first minute and 99-cents per minute after that.
I think if i were to take a date to the Peloponnesian War, I'd most definitely take a Delorean.

Excellent point. The Delorean is certainly cool but it's a pain in the ass unless you just want to travel back in time in your area of the world. Of course, once Doc got the thing to fly, it certainly made things easier.

reply

Yeah, I'd take the phone booth. Why?

1. It doesn't seem to need any fuel.
2. As mentioned, it's easily repaired (without even any real tools).
3. It can take you through both time AND space.
4. It comes with a directory of times, places, and significant historical events.
5. You can make actual phone calls with the booth.
6. Doesn't require you to drive really fast in an open space (how many times did the car crash into something right after hitting a new year?).

reply

Of course as Time travelling Phone Boxes go, that was the Hyundai of them, the premium way to travel is of course Police Phone Box

Hell is other People

flying delorean > phone booth > grounded delorean

aside from when einstein travels 1 minute into the future, every ground time travel on screen has a crash of some sort.

Marty going back to 1955 takes out a tree and a barn
Marty returning to 1985 crashes into the movie theatre
Doc returning to 1985 (presumably from the future) knocks over a garbage can
Marty going back to 1885 gets in the middle of a stampede and an arrow ruptures the fuel take
Marty returning to 1985 at the very end of course gets the delorean run over

and of course twice getting stuck once due to lack of fuel, once due to inadequate means to generate 88 MPH.

Phone booth goes through time and space but has the disadvantage of not being able to travel laterally. In other words the only where it can go is through time. So you have the problem of where to put it? At least a delorean you can park in a lot or take with you as a means of transportation.

But the flying delorean trumps all; easy means of transport, plutonium generated by garbage, time travel can be acheived in mid air.

This!

reply

I agree, but the only draw back I can see for the flying Delorean is if I wanted to travel back in time to some far off country like China or South Africa (I live in Toronto, Canada). I mean, sure it would be possible to fly there in the Delorean, but I imagine it would take a considerable amount of the time traveler's time. Where the phone booth would be able to travel the distance instantiously.

reply

You still need gasoline. Gas is unobtainable in the vast majority of time one could travel to.

reply

Even the flying DeLorean had its disadvantages.

For example, Doc, Marty, and Jennifer almost having a head-on collision with oncoming traffic traveling to 2015, and the DeLorean being struck while in the air since it's closer to lightning, sending Doc back to 1885.

As cool as it is, I would probably take the phone booth. At least all you need is some chewing gum to fix the antennae if it's ever broken.

reply

2) Which is incredibly impressive considering the booth is advanced technology from the future.

6) Excellent point. The odds of the landscape being exactly the same in whatever period you travel to is pretty unlikely.

reply

I would pick the phonebooth not only can you use it without having to generate a certain speed, but it would be easier to hide or even explain.

It was the director, Stephen Herek, who came up with the idea of a phone booth.
"...who ripped-off the idea of a phone booth from Doctor Who."

There, I fixed it for you 😉

reply

Ripped off is such a harsh word, more like inspired.
Any way its so hard to decide, Id love a TARDIS and Delorian.
Bill and Teds phone box would be cool too.

A TARDIS is great to travel time and space.
A DeLorean is cool to visit your friends in another city.
A phonebox is good if you want to visit the shops.

reply

Keep in mind that the phone booth is not actually a phone booth.

Originally, the time machine was to be a 1969 Chevrolet van, but the idea was abandoned as being too close in concept to the DeLorean used in the Back to the Future trilogy. Instead, despite the similarities to Doctor Who's time machine, the TARDIS, the film's time machine was styled after a 1960s American telephone booth.

reply

WELL SAID....ARE YOU DEAD YET?

reply

Though the DeLorean is much cooler looking, I'm going to go with the phone box.

Mainly because the phone box can move in time and space. The DeLorean only in time, which was somehow less convenient.

Also, anybody can use the phonebox, whereas the DeLorean only by people who know how to drive.

Other people also made good points about how easy it is to fix, unlike Marty McFly who got stuck for a week in 1955 because his plutonium ran out.

The phone box is more practical in a lot of ways. Just not as stylish.

reply

The DeLorean, hands down!

reply

and it's in a better movie

plus people are not jammed inside of it. The people trying to support the phone book probably have no idea how tiny these things are. Full phone booths do not exist anymore and we all use cells now.

Remember they are trying to fit several men into the booth--who are bigger than women. Having room to sit in one is suppoed to be very dfficult--this is why it was impossible for a person in a wheelchair to use them. You were supposed to stand up during the whole time you were in it. This would be uncomfortable

reply

The DeLorean can only fit 2 people and has no backseat. If there is no need to travel with anyone (either to or from a destination), then the phonebooth is the better option, if for no reason other than gas availability.

reply

Would you really want to stand up everywhere you traveled? And the point of the movie is that you have to travel with somebody.

Yes there was a backseat in this model---remember they had jennifer in it for part of the second one bc she inadvertently saw what was happening and they had to take her along. It can fit more than two people. More than two people can sit down.

reply

Jennifer was sitting in the front with them. So was Einstein. Doc Brown had to remove the back seat to make room for the flux capacitor and other equipment. As for standing in the booth while traveling, just put a chair in there.

reply

it's impossible to fit chairs in phonebooths--which is why people in wheelchairs had problems using those models. They're chairs too. The point is that even if it's just one person in a chair--the diameter of that phone booth would not fit that one person. It was supposed to be smaller than a non-walk in closet.

This is why they don't have them anymore.

The movie is a relic while somebody watching back to the future 20 years later still understands what a car more or less is is.
