Best end ever

Never seen so beautiful ending in the movie

Great movie.
Greatest unintentional comedy moment of all time where Alex and Tommy look at each other and Alex screams "We're bringing home the gold" and they both yell "Yeah" and give each other high-fives. Hilarious. Also, I balled like a little girl at the end with Dae Han's speech.

reply

yep this ending is great when dae han says those things to tommy
man i had a little tear in my man,

man i am soft

reply

i hate to admit it... but i was full out crying at the end....

it was ... so beautiful...

reply

Whenever I mention Best of the Best my gf always says: "That's the only movie thats ever made you cry right?"...so now I don't bring it up anymore when were hanging out with our friends...

reply

i cried too. and i can still cry after watching it again and again. usually its chicks mentioning some old romantic movie that made them bawl... and then here i am saying that a martial arts b-movie was the one that brought tears to me eyes!

reply

I completely agree with EVERYONE! I remember watching this movie with my dad as a little girl, but until recently I had completely forgotten about it!! I stumbled upon it one day and the end nearly reduced me to tears!! Like you, joits, I rarely get choked up by chickish movies... but a martial arts film with an ending like that? Forget about it!! YAY FOR THE GREATEST MARTIAL ARTS FILM EVER!

reply

As a martial artist of the last twenty years, as a teacher and a student... Ah, to heck with it! I love this film. The 'silly kicks' by the Rhee brothers inspired me in my younger Taekwondo days (I've studied WTF and ITF, amongst many other martial arts) and I still watch it to this day. Indeed, it was one of the few movies that I brought over with me when I made a recent move to the States. For those that love their martial arts movies, check it out. It's worth it and, yes, the ending is moving, at least seemingly for us martial art types.

I was lucky enough to find the DVD of this, at Wal-Mart a week ago. I watched it yesterday, or the day before, and I, too was constantly rubbing my eyes all through the ending. I just can't help it. There are less than a handful of films that I've seen that make me shed tears, this is the only one I can remember right now.

I would have loved to see this in the movie theater back when it came out. Did any of you ever see it in the theater?

Although you won't get any arguement from me as to whether this is a great film, there's one thing that really bugged me at the end. When Dae Han is out on his feet and Tommy is about to kick his teeth down his throught, why didn't Tommy just tap him and watch him go down??? That way he wouldn't have killed him but still would have taken the point???

I know I'm probably looking at this too logically, and had this happened there wouldn't have been the "beautiful" ending, but I just don't get why nobody else has brought this up?

Great film though.

i think this movie is phenomenal. i have loved it ever since i was a child. the ending still gets me everytime, cannot think of another ending quite as touching as this one. great 80s flick.

reply

I actually had a different thought on this movie...i thought the ending was terrible instead of putting the medal on him he should have inserted his fist ripped out his heart and then cresen kicked him in the face. sorry ez

I think most of the people who appreciate the ending of this film have studied some form of martial art. It is a great example of the human sprit and averse to the usual revenge formula which is much more 'the norm' and 'cliche'.

I think so many people bred on violent action movies must have complained about the ending as part 2 had no meaningful message, it was just a hyped up 'Mortal Combat' clone.

Best Of The Best 1 and the Rocky films have really inspired my life and my whole philosophy as they are much more 'human' then your usual action films.

Here here!
That was my sentiment as well.

I do believe it had to do with the struggle Tommy had to not become like Dae Han.
It was a matter of controlling his emotions.
He was not able to just tap him down and so he did nothing rather than kill him which he would have had he kicked him.

But I certainly enjoyed the poignant ending.

I'll throw in my two cents as well. Very VERY few movies have ever made me shed tears ( examples that did include "Godzilla vs Destroyah" for Godzilla's death scene and "Terminator 2" for the ending), but this was so unexpected. There was something so sincere about and the fact that it was a bit unexpected.

i thought the ending reminded me of a manga film. in the tommy vs dae han fight when all the lights go out except a tiny spotlight focusing on the fighers and the crowd noise going to silence. i absolutely love the ending from about the grady fight onwards. the rest of the film has some decent fights and montages but the ending is actually really good

I thought the movie was just okay until I reached the ending. Made me teared up so much I would watch it again.
