Best end ever
Never seen so beautiful ending in the movie
shareI totally agree. I remember seeing this when I was quite young and many years on after I finally got to watch it again I still remember it. Beautiful ending, very moving.
shareNah... its to cliché...
shareI think this is a really good movie, as it has a lot more to it than your typical martial arts movie, for example the ending was a nice suprise as you thought he would surely just kill Dae Han but instead they embrace during the medal ceremony,,,,,,, a nice touch dont you agree?
"Wiggle the palm tree"
"Hop on in, your riding the fastest wheels in Bangkok"
I, myself, am an avid martial artist. This movie is my favorite of all time. It is a wonderful movie. it's truly inspirational and eye-opening. The end was very touching and brought tears to my eyes. Too bad the sequels weren't nearly as good.
shareI totally agree with all of you! It's my favourite movie too. But there's one thing that bothers me; they mix-up karate and Taekwon-do (they mention both). What they compete in is called WTF, World Taekwon-do Federation, (ITF = International Taekwon-do Federation is the original Taekwon-do) and as a martial artist myself it bothers me to hear them say Karate (in the movie, I mean) cause I practise Taekwon-do. Just had to mention that. But it's still the BEST MOVIE WITH THE BEST END EVER!!!

Don't misunderstand me. I mean that ITF is the orginal Taekwon-Do because WTF was founded after ITF. General Choi Hong Hi founded ITF and one of his students started WTF after that he was closed off from ITF. That's also why ITF and WTF have alot techniques and stuff that are the same. (You'll have to excuse me, it's difficult for me to write in good english 'cause I'm from Sweden). I never said that WTF is a problem, it's almost the same as ITF except for that WTF have a little less techniques and different rules in competitions. Then there is GTF = Global Taekwon-Do Federation which came after WTF. I didn't mean to upset you or something.

The style in the movie is NOT WTF Taekwondo. I am on the national team for my country in WTF Taekwondo and this is not it. It is ITF in its rules but more WTF in that its full contact. But then ITF does not allow throws so there is an influence of Judo. But then the point system is Karate. So the basic premise is that its supposed to be mixed martial art. My view on why this is so is so it is more accessible to the audience. For example if it was WTF rules your non taekwondoin would ask wh dont they punch ? If it were Judo they would ask why dont they kick or punch. But anyway being set in South Korea and having the Rhee brothers in it tends it more toward WTF taekwondo. Not to mention the WTF bade on Sonny's Dobok during the trials.
shareAmad Rashad clearly states before the Matches start that it is a MIX of TKD,kickboxing,Judo, and Karate. This is an amalgamation of different martial arts competitions (I have studied TKD and Judo myself). I am guessing that the first tournament is an open martial arts tournament because you can see a few Savate fighters in there as well. But, all this just makes for good film making and entertainment (Dont get me wrong, this is a GREAT movie.)
LOL...WTF means something totally different now. I can't believe I'm replying to an 11 year old comment! We have hoverboards now!

Erm, this may have been answered by now, but Karate is used as a general term for empty hand fighting. Which is what this is and what Karate means. There is actually a line in the film from the commentator saying that the competition allows styles of Karate, TaeKwon Do and Judo...
Plus it's just a film! :-P
The ending of this film is great.
===SPOILERS(should be obvious by now)=========
I thought it was going to be super cliche and he would beat the guy that killed his brother, possibly kill him, the end. But nope, great ending.
It was a fantastic ending.
If you look at what Martial Arts cinema had to offer in the mid to late 80's, here's what we have.
The Karate Kid Trilogy: Bad guy wrongs good guy, good guy out for revenge, ONE bad guy shows remorse.
Bloodsport: Bad guy beats living crap out of good guy's friend, good guy takes it personal, bad guy shows no remorse.
Kickboxer: Bad guy beats living crap out of good guy's brother, good guy take it personal, bad guy shows no remorse.
Bloodfist: Bad guy KILLS good guy's brother, good guy takes it personal, bad guy shows no remorse.
All the things the main bad guy did in all of the movies are the same. They're almost totally sociopathic, and the motivation for revenge is always the result of pure killer instict.
You take Best of the Best. Dae Han didn't MEAN to kill Tommy's brother...it was an accident. Accidents happen in full contact sports. Lawerence Taylor broke Joe Theisman's leg, and called for the paramedics to help Joe. Tommy was on his own personal quest for vengeance, and Dae Han sums it up by showing that he, being a world class fighter and general guy you don't want to meet in a back alley, is after all just a human being with feelings and not a cold, bloodthirsty killer.
It was a fantastic touch.
"Tell me, Mr. Anderson, what good is a phone call, if you are unable to speak?" - Agent Smith
Amen. I also like the fact that the korean team actually won the tournament. I think that's unique for a movie made in the US.

I disagree with whatever statement you made in your last email entitled "Best and ever." Though I have not seen this movie, nor have I read your post pertaining to it, I'm positive that what you've written is wrong. And sinful. And onorous in the eyes of The Lord Jesus Christ.
Christ is the Best of the Best. And none other. Blessed be his name.
Also, Christ is the Best And Ever.
Amen.
... I don't wanna be offensive (or off topic), but you can't be serious? It's a movie about personal and spiritual growth, about winners and losers, discipline... all the crap christianity threatens you with hell if you don't do. How the HELL does calling this movie cool make a person sinful?
Anyway, onto the greateness of the movie... I watched this because a friend mentioned it I think at the start of High School, so I'd be about 12 or 13, thereabouts. I taped it off TV, Bravo channel, 11.30 or so at night, lol. I still have the tape, put it that way - it's been about 6 or 8 years :p I taped BOTB 2 after it, but since the tape is so old I just had to get the DVD..
Ever since then, the ending has made me cry, EVERY TIME, and I'm not ashamed of that. I've got a real soft spot for honour in movies. I love the ending to this movie... I don't consider it cliche at all, I suppose it could be a little predictable, since it's only a 12 rated movie, I think, and that Tommy is the good guy, I suppose you could rightfully figure "Nah, he won't kill the guy." *shrug* Hell, this movie blows me away, and it's what got me into Taekwondo :-)
Any fellow fans out there who wanna chat about what other movies you love, I'd love to, gotta meet new people somewhere with similar interests :)

The thread is "best END ever," not best AND ever. Best AND ever makes no sense. Also, I don't recall seeing any karate tournaments on ESPN 2 featuring Jesus of Nazareth defending his title.
we are talking about a movie if you want to go talk about christ go to a bible sermon.
shareDude, have you been watching Saved?
He was talking about a MOVIE. Go back to capalert and jerk off at the red-light ratings that are given to G-rated flicks.
Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast!
This movie is incredibly underrated. I actually broke a tear at the end. It's absolutely fantastic. Best martial arts movie ever!
sharewouldn't say it was the greatest martial arts movie, but the ending was great and pretty unique for martial arts movies. its rare to see the "good guys" lose. and usually the bad guys are really bad guys, here, they are just competitive koreans who in the end are quite similar to the good guys. so despite th cliche's in this movie, its still enjoyable to watch.
shareIll be honest, I was centimeters away from crying at the end of this movie, especially when Dae Han is making his speech to Jason.
"Somebody drop this fool"
I gotta add my two-cents worth, my favorite martial arts movie of them all...although I tend to think of it more as a "sport" movie than a bona fide martial arts film (which is not to say that I don't consider martial arts as a sport, so don't start on me, guys!) I've seen this film a dozen times or more and I STILL get teary-eyed at the end. I agree, the sequels blew, but then, most sequels do.
I am NOT a martial artist so a lot of the dialogue you guys have going on about style and such is beyond me. The point of the movie, like any good drama, is the resolution of the conflict, and I think it was pulled off beautifully. This is also the only Eric Roberts movie that I can think of that I even liked.
By the way, to the overzealous Christian bro who wrote above, two points...one, learn to read. Second, remember that what the world needs is more Christian fruit and fewer religious nuts.

Wonderful film, most critics panned it & didn't give it enough credit, but it's very good. The ending is one of the best of all movies I've seen, ranks in my top three probably.
I taped this off a movie channel 3-4 weeks ago, then, last night, at 3:15 am, Best of the Best II came on, so I taped that also, not as good as the first but it keeps you interested most of the time. Sonny Landham's character James plays a pretty good drunk, the scenes with him are pretty funny! Until the bad guys get him. :(
Eric Roberts really seems to be overacting all through the movie, he's extremely emotional throughout the film, but I think he did a pretty great job. That scene where they pop his shoulder back makes me cringe, ugh. But he still manages to win, or at least score more points, pretty cool.
But the ending....that's the best part of the movie. But the freeze shot at the very end...it shows Alex, Tommy, that women trainer, and some other unknown guy, heh heh.
This is my signature, nice eh?
This was a really good movie! I don't know if id personally call its ending, "the best ending ever", but a good ending nonetheless. I wasn't surprised Tommy didn't kill Dae Han though, i was surprised that the U.S. team end up losing.
And i thought "Best Of The Best II" was a really good movie too! A very worthy sequel.

Yeah, and it should be rated MUCH higher.
shareId just like to say, you all seem to be saying "I was inches away from tears", or "I broke a tear." I just wannate ll you without shame I CRIED MY ASS OFF at the end of this movie, lol. It never fails to get me choked up, and more often than not I cry. IT is just beautiful.
I see this film along the lines, almost, of the karate kid formula. No, not quite.. maybe Rocky. Basically it's more a training film than a fighting film. I love training films. Montages rock :-D lol
Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...
OMG!!!! THIS GUY IS RIGHT!!! KUNG FU MOVIES ARE LIKE PORN!!! 1 ON 1, 2 ON 1 ,THEN A GROUP SCENE!!!! LMAO!!!! WHAT A GREAT COMPARISON! I'VE NEVER LOOKED AT IT QUITE THAT WAY BEFORE!!!LOL!!!!!!
share*Grins* Alexi Sayle made the comparison in a documentary as part of 1997's Kung Fu Night. "In fact they're quite similar, aren't they? I mean, first there's one on one action, then two on one action, then three on one action, then there's always a group scene........ or so I'm told."
Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...
have to agree with everyone, or some of you...i'm a guy and this is actually the only film i've ever properly shed a tear to. It's about fighting (you think) and then the ending just blows you away from the final battle between tommy and the eye patch guy and then the medal ceremony. Always will remember that ending.
shareGreat movie...Great ending. This proves once again that there is a great genre movie in almost any filmmaker who manages to get the basics right. The films director Robert Radler, did justice to a good story, great casting, well earned emotional payoffs, and easily, some of the best Taekwon Do action you are likely to see. With all the genre bases covered he could then deliver extras an unexpected touching, crowd pleasing ending that tied the story up nicely, and ensured that Best of the Best would become a guaranteed rental/cable classic.
Sidenote - Who would you rather have out of the two birds in the bar?
