United States National Karate Team?

Just watched this movie again recently, I'm a huge fan of it. Wondering why though... the team was named the United States National Karate Team?? Tommy Lee was clearly a practitioner and instructor (we see him teaching) of Taekwondo, not Karate, although I can't speak for the 4 other guys on the team. The South Korean team were also clearly experts in Taekwondo, not Karate.

Being a Taekwondo practitioner myself I know that the South Korean team's master is Grand Master Hee Il Cho, a 9th degree Taekwondo expert, and of course Taekwondo originates from South Korea.

Maybe it's just that back then when people thought of martial arts they just mainly thought of "Karate", I.e, if you knew martial arts, you knew Karate. Quite annoying.
